I'm no conspiri-loon, but if this is the kind of stuff that DARPA-funded companies are allowing us to see, god only knows what else they've developed that they're keeping under wraps...

There's a famous quote about this from someone - take the bleeding edge of state of the art, and add 25 years.

The number of years probably varies by field, I'd believe that for encryption, but robotics can't be made as much use of without revealing it.

Thinking of the polywell fusion reactor the us navy is investing in, now high oil prices are a potential threat to the economy and china is building a coal power plant every week, maybe they have decided to release tech they have had on submarines for years :hmm:

These things are impressive but it's not exactly good clean fun is it? Being developed for the military so at best it will be used for reconnaissance and at worst it will be a hunter-killer machine. Shouldn't be too hard to either remote control it or to fit something to detect a large animal presence - plus a weapon of some sort. They've very likely done it already. I don't feel ecstatic about that.

littledog has got much better at rough terrain

do not resist. remain compliant. a robot dog will be here shortly to administer a sedative

"The wars of the future will not be fought on the battlefield or at sea. They will be fought in space, or possibly on top of a very tall mountain. In either case, most of the actual fighting will be done by small robots. And as you go forth today remember always your duty is clear: To build and maintain those robots."

The project has been kicking about for a while now. It's intended for carrying heavy kit cross country (bergans, ammo, water, etc). The biggest problem with things like this is power consumption though. It could be useful for emergency services though, it can go where people can't or can carry alot of heavy kit.

I want to see them fight, surrounded by a baying crowd of Tokyo techno-fetishists, betting with electronic credits.

The last session of the parliament of the British Republic was held in a disused car factory in Dagenham, while the US/UN teletroopers closed in.

The built-in carrying handle is a nice touch.

Wonder how long till they're in the shops?

I imagine they use very high-spec motors, batteries and materials. so, a while yet.

Unfortunately, petrol engines and their fuel are still the most weight-efficient power source we have. So it has a little 2-stroke engine and makes a racket. There's footage of it working in the lab, connected by umbilical to an external electricity supply and it's almost silent.
