RIP Shane MacGowan

First time I saw The Pogues, they were on in the middle of the afternoon at WOMAD.

A Pair Of Brown Eyes had just come out. They were superb. Wild, pissed, out of control then utterly beautiful. Saw Shane the next day wandering the site with a placcy bag full of bevvy and still wearing the lurid orange shirt he'd been wearing on stage the day before.

Ace weekend. Cheers Shane.

I suspect him and dr strangelove are heading in different directions but I like the thought of him nutting kissinger as they pass on the afterlife escalator.

Go well Shane - a unique talent. The pogues were a bit of game changing band and a had a big cultural impact - he gave a powerful, poetic and raw voice to the london irish diaspora and outcasts everywhere.

I just sent this to a friend :

I’ve just seen your post about Shane. I’ll be raising a glass in his honour today for sure.

I knew him a little bit back in the day. Well, everyone did I suppose. I was dating someone in his circle. We’d all go to the Dev in Camden. Shane would drink til he went silent, then drink more til he started singing. He’d sway on his stool, eyes shut, and run through his repertoire. Everyone would stop talking while he sang. There really was something chthonic and ritualistic in his voice. Even though it was broken because he was broken, the soul and the glory of it was apparent and would stun us into silence, every single time. There was never any applause or comment, just emotional response to whatever it was that he dragged up from the tumbling depths and poured out into the room.

I met him loads of times as he was frequently to be found propping up the bar of Filthy McNasties, which I believe he had a share in. That was 20 odd years ago and he looked like shite then.

A shame but on the plus side, if Shane can make it to 65, I must be good for 80!

It's strange for me now when people who live the rock n roll lifestyle die. I used to look up to them for doing it. Now that I'm sober myself, I just wish they'd stick around and enjoy this beautiful world we've got for a bit longer.

I fucking love The Pogues though. Would I have them any other way? Probably not. I know Spider and Càit are sober too, now. I'm glad they're still with us

I'm probably not making any sense. I'm really quite saddened by this. RIP Shane.

I also bumped into him once at Brixton Academy (I think it was when I saw The Damned and The Ramones).
Well, it would be more accurate to say he bumped into me - literally - drink had been taken on both sides and I thought we were both going down but I managed to get a hand to his chest and give him a shove. We both remained upright, we clinked (plastic) glasses and went on our way.
Hah, that's reminded me of something I completely forgot, I bumped into him too, also literally, backstage at the Fleadh one year when i was working for a catering company. I had my head down picking litter and he was obviously mind elsewhere too.
