Too bad... I think underrated as a band... loads of good albums. Shame they never got it back together with Cornwell.

I'm gald that the article mentioned the comparison with Ray Manzerek , I always thought the Stranglers were the first band I'd heard use that keyboard style after the Doors

I'm sure Dave would be flattered by the comparison.

Dave's organ parts were always driving, even when he was playing virtuoso stuff. That kept him out of Rick Wakeman, AKA tedious shit territory.

That’s spoiled the day.
Sad to hear this. Rattus and Black and White my favourites too.
I was in a music shop in Doncaster in the late seventies when he strolled in and bought two Wasp keyboards. He was quite amiable and had time for people I remember. I saw them at Doncaster Outlook early in the New Wave era.
Brilliant live act and I still remember the excitement hearing London Lady live the first time.
No more heroes, Go Buddy Go.
RIP. :(

Always thought their version of Walk On By had a hint of Light My Fire about it.

I really liked Dave's playing though. He had his own take and could really blast it out. I love electric piano and the way he dipped between that and organ. RIP Dave and thanks.

They were my first "punk" gig - Bristol Exhibition Centre ...

I may have been a strange frame of mind at the time, but I swear I remember at least a couple of the Stranglers turned up at a Slaughter and the Dogs gig at Barton Hill Youth Centre in 1977-ish...

This from Hugh Cornwall on Twitter pretty much sums his contribution up.

"He was the difference between The Stranglers and every other punk band."

Saw them in 1978. Reading Top Rank. Rattus is their best album. I wasn't much interested in their later stuff tbh.

RIP

ah shit. strangles did some really great stuff - and his keyboard playing was central to their sound - dark, moody, driving but always melodically interesting and inventive - went perfectly with JJs pile driving bass runs.
Saw them a couple of years ago and they were still really good even without hugh cornwell - was going to see them at festival this years also.
Go well Dave. And fuck fuck fucking fuck.
