Recommend me stuff on Shudder.com horror channel

We only got the free trial cos of Halloween, but most of the stuff on there looks terrible tbh, so far anyway. Hammy cod horror or slasher shit.
The 7-day trial period is all you need to watch all the good stuff currently being shown. And there are some good films to be found IMO as recommended in this thread.

Holy fucking SHIIIIIIT - Host! Was scared to go for a piss on me own after that :D :D Arrghhh!!! At least neither of us had nightmares though, which is unusual, given how susceptible we are usually :D

Hell House LLC was excellent too. Will try another one tonight. Put a Tena lady on first :D

Hell House LLC was good but I actually preferred the second one :)

I watched Last Shift and Pontypool over the weekend. Both recommended though perhaps old hat for some here.

Last Shift is about a haunted police station and it's got great atmosphere and suspense. It builds to something a little bit OTT but that's the way with haunting films - the first half of the film is usually better than the second half. But then I'm a bit jaded with this sort of thing and I'm not sure others will see it that way. So definitely watch it if you like spooky ghost films.

Pontypool is a Canadian zombie film with a mimetic language virus instead of the usual kind. Which is sort of brilliant, but what I really liked about it was that it was set in a radio station and you heard about most of the action rather than seeing it which I thought was really effective. The first half of the film would work fine as a radio play, and the rest could be adapted for radio without losing much. A very verbal rather than a visual film but that works and you don't have to worry about rubbish CGI/practical effects.

I have mostly been using my subscription watching the documentary films/series, I quite enjoy watching other people waxing lyrical about the horror they love and learning more about the genre.

I have yet to really find anything else (new to me) that has grabbed me unfortunately.

I don't think I'll end up renewing my subscription.

Reno, I really rate your film reviews and knowledge (and knotted is running you close these days!).

I'd really love to know what your top ten films are. Or top twenty. I love the way you look at them and the way you Actually Know What You're Talking About.

Would you indulge one day?

Thank you ! :)

Turns out I did a list here a while ago:

There would be quite a few new ones since and some which I wouldn't include anymore after a recent rewatch.

Rewatching Hell House LLC and it's a good found footage film, genuinely scary in parts. Would recommend.

The two sequels are on too, but not seen them so can't comment on how good/bad they are.

Just watched this and I thought it was really good. It effectively shows you what it's going to do before it does it, but it still works somehow. I've heard bad things about the second film and good things about the third if that helps.

Well I've tried The Hallow, which I'd heard good things about but I thought it was generally rubbish. It has its moments and some decent creature effects but I thought it was flat and strangely emotionless and the direction was clichéd. It introduces some Irish folklore which could have been interesting but it's really just a creature feature and that's fine but it seemed to be aiming for something a bit more and not delivering on it.

But that's a minority opinion so you might well like it. I think some people are seeing something more in it than I am.

The Horror Noire documentary film about black representation in horror is really well worth watching. I really don't know anything about the 70's blaxploitation horror films such as Blacula so that was all new to me. Of course the documentary discusses a lot more, starting on the very sour note of Birth of a Nation through Night of the Living Dead to Get Out and lots more on the way. The commentary is really excellent.

Otherwise I'm feeling a bit stuck with Shudder. Most of the new entries look terrible. I may cancel my subscription.

The 2019 film Porno which is new to Shudder turns out to be pretty good.... Well I like it anyway. It's not as sleazy as you might expect from the title. it's about five repressed Christian teenagers finding an illicit film roll, which is not so much a porno but more a weird X rated giallo style art film with a bit of full frontal. It's got a good sense of watching something you're not supposed to watch, so there's a nod to Videodrome but it's Videodrome's dafter schlockier cousin and it's only really subversive if you share the Christian values of the protagonists. However, I think it turns out to be a relatively effective coming of age film hidden under a very unsubtle horror flick. There's a scene with where Peter Reznikoff shows up and does some devilish over acting which is just great. Thankfully it does not take itself too seriously to the point that it's really a tongue in cheek comedy and that's the sort of thing I signed up for.

[Contains some scenes that some viewers might find difficult to watch. Lots of willies in various stages of attachment.. Also some really bad first aid. You're putting a tourniquet on that?]

By the way, is anybody still subscribed or am I just talking to myself at this point?
I'm not subscribing because much of the content on German Shudder is only available dubbed but I think I've seen nearly all of the films discussed here. I thought Porno had a good premise and decent first half, but I wasn't that impressed with the execution. I thought the sex-demon-women were silly. I liked Hallow better than Porno, an Assault on Precinct 13 with malevolent fairies.

You reminded me that I was going to track down Horror Noire.

There is or was an acclaimed French mini-series about a haunted house on Shudder called Beyond the Walls (Au-delà des Murs) , which I'd like to see but haven't been able to get hold of.

Edit: After reminding myself, I just found a subtitled torrent which downloaded really fast.

I'll check that out, though haunted houses are one of my least favourite subgenre of horror.

I think you'll love Horror Noire. Socio-political commentary on horror B-movies. It's what heaven looks like.
