Recommend a wine...

That indentation in the bottom of the bottle thing. I know some people think it's rubbish, I don't. It's always worked for me. At least, the other way around, you don't put good wine in a shit bottle (with no indentation). And IME you don't put crap wine in a nice thick glass bottle with a deep indentation. YMMV but it's generally a simple test that works for me.

I've heard people say this before, but don't believe it. Surely, it would be easy just to put shit wine in a 'nice' bottle to fool punters into thinking they're getting something good?

The production costs of the bottle are prohibitive apparently. And people who know wine won't be fooled by a bottle twice so it generally wouldn't work.

I believe it's a decent, if not foolproof test.

Don't most fizzy whites have that sort of bottle shape? And you can pick up some of them for a fiver...

Have no idea. I don't drink white, I'm only talking about red. White wine is for teenagers at parties isn't it? ;)

(They won't be of the same thickness of glass)

My experience too with the indentation. Friend's Italian wife swears by looking for DOC or DOCG on the label.

French equivalent is AOC or AC. It's some sort of government categorisation of wines that are tested.

Had some great DOCG chianti on special from the big Aldi recently. Absolutely lovely tasted like velvet. YMMV

From the corner shop, £9-10 at the moment :(. I like it as it gets you proper buzzing, but only for daytime drinking or early on as it messes with my sleep

I don't do cheap wines. I'd rather spend the extra and pay about 3€ from the supermarket. There's such a noticeable difference in quality.

It always shocks me how much poor quality wine can cost in the UK.

There's a lot of snobbery around boxes of wine. In my opinion the wine is what's important not the container or stopper. But a surprisingly high number of people disagree.

Mate, I'm most definitely not a conisour of anything. Wine, beer, food or weed. I'm not after the taste I'm always chasing the effects.

I like the dry white flinty loire wines; sancerre, pouilly fume and the like. A few years ago an offy recomended Menetou Salon, £15/20 a bottle.

Tesco do a ‘Fruity Red’ for £3.65. Spanish, dead basic, but easily quaffable. It’s only 11%, so you can drink that extra glass without feeling the effects. They also do a ‘Zesty White’, ditto all the above and OK to cook with. Once you get used to it, it makes a lot of other Spanish wine seem too heavy. It’s the sort of stuff the Spanish drink at home.

Tesco Pinot £4.50 a bottle is surprisingly nice. I only really drink Pinot. I’m not a fan of red wine at all.

Depends on your preference don't it... You're better off buying a cheaper bottle of something you like, than a more expensive one for a grape/region you don't.

E.g all the wine experts say bordeaux is the best in the world... but it's too heavy for me - at least at the price I can pay. I prefer cote du rhone, pinot noir or rioja.. also like grenache.. On the rare occasion I buy a bottle now in Tesco I go for the Camp Viejo Rioja...

Used to be that the Chilean and Argentine wines were good value..

I find this works for me.

Sainsbury's Taste The Difference French sauvignon blanc is good - about £7 a bottle.

My go to wine. Only found in Asda (£6-7) or Waitrose (£9-10). The bottle has been changed to a regular design but the wine is still lush.

Campo Viejo is overpriced in the UK. We pay about 3€ for it here. I don't drink it because there's better for that price. The UK is ripped off.

At the moment we're drinking a lot of tempranillo wines. Lightish, slightly dry and good value.

Mrs D has suddenly got a taste for sweet pinks. Not my favourite, but they're OK when very chilled.

I don't really get to enjoy white wine or rosé because although OH will willingly neck a bottle of Messerschmidt or 20/20, he won't go as far as to drink white wine. :D

I've been working my way through a Chilean Shiraz or something of that nature (I typically when finances allow have a glass of wine with dinner but use other stuff to get drunk).
