Thanks for the info. Have you ever been there?People walk tens of miles to it every year, to punish themselves for anything they might have done wrong, or anything they might do wrong in a future life.
I believe you can get miracle water there. I think it's the same stuff the sponges are soaked in before using them on fallen footballers.
Knock? Only a few hundred times. Thanks for the info. Have you ever been there?
That's really great. Many I-A's claim heritage from Mayo. Ever stop by the shrine?Knock? Only a few hundred times.
Knock, like most villages in Ireland, is very small. There are pretty much two things there, an airport and the shrine. I've been to the airport probably over 100 times. I've been to the shrine once. I've never been to the airport but went to the shrine as a kid once when we were on holiday over that way. Remember there being a big church and holy water containers shaped like the Virgin Mary and all that type of religious souvenir. (Cant remember the year but must've been round the time of JP II's visit so late 70s maybe?)Knock, like most villages in Ireland, is very small. That would have been around the time I went, either late 70s or early 80s. It was the same year I climbed croagh Patrick, so I must have been getting those things over with while I was still a sprog.I've never been to the airport but went to the shrine as a kid once when we were on holiday over that way. I've also a tacky keyring somewhere a friend brought me back as a present (not quite sure why tbh).
Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Knock !Knock airport (IWAK) is 19km from Knock village (shrine).... not really that close.
For a visit it really depends what you like or are into... the west is well equipped for outdoor adventures.. walking, cycling, hiking, swimming and surfing..
A visit to any of the islands is well recommended for something very different.. Clare Island, Inishturk and Inisboffin are a different world..

Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Knock !
Why Our Lady of Knock is celebrated on two different days in Ireland
The anniversary of the apparition at Knock is on August 21, but most of Ireland honors Our Lady on August 17 in the liturgy.aleteia.org
'Tis true. Much of Ireland has lost their faith...Most of Ireland has moved on from superstition
Tens of Thousands still do pilgrimages to Knock, Croke Patrick and Loch Derg. Most of Ireland has moved on from superstition and fairytales.

Im surprised to see that in the private / secret part of peoples opinions , that >70% still claim to be catholic on the census .... so i think its not gone far (enough) away yet
I used to get dragged there on a regular basis. Didn't do much good. If you're religious go for it.Does anyone here have any experience with visiting this place:

Ireland's International Eucharistic and Marian Shrine in Knock, County Mayo, is the site of an Apparition in 1879www.knockshrine.ie
Do locals go? Strictly tourists? Or a deserted, forgotten place from the past?
Far removed from Catholic teachings.Well you realise that the same people voted for gay marriage and passed other referenda.
I think most people who are Catholic are far removed from the very rigid type of faith. They are pragmatic about life.

Sounds dangerously protestant!People see that the real message is about bringing people together and that the true message was and is about loving our neighbour.
The man made rules and regulations are a side dish..often left there.
Not really...the belief in trans substantiation is still strong.Sounds dangerously protestant!
Trans Jesus is best Jesus. Not really...the belief in trans substantiation is still strong.
