Recommend A Place For A Visit

People walk tens of miles to it every year, to punish themselves for anything they might have done wrong, or anything they might do wrong in a future life.
I believe you can get miracle water there. I think it's the same stuff the sponges are soaked in before using them on fallen footballers.
Thanks for the info. Have you ever been there?

Knock, like most villages in Ireland, is very small. There are pretty much two things there, an airport and the shrine. I've been to the airport probably over 100 times. I've been to the shrine once. I'm not a very religious person.
I've never been to the airport but went to the shrine as a kid once when we were on holiday over that way. Remember there being a big church and holy water containers shaped like the Virgin Mary and all that type of religious souvenir. (Cant remember the year but must've been round the time of JP II's visit so late 70s maybe?)

I've also a tacky keyring somewhere a friend brought me back as a present (not quite sure why tbh).

That would have been around the time I went, either late 70s or early 80s. It was the same year I climbed croagh Patrick, so I must have been getting those things over with while I was still a sprog. :D

....same ..... been there once as a child, prob in the 70s too (dragged by my mother - hardly against my will as a day-out is a day-out) and just remember it being very touristy but with BIG overtones of religion (statues, rosary beads, holy water , books etc). There was a procession we were involved with (cross between kkk march and mardis gras - but more irish) and my mother carried a flag or something. Anyway .... if you are religious, its worth a visit. I dare say that if you are not, then its not (unless you want to visit ironically....)

Went on a school tour to Knock in secondary school

We took the train. Had our packed lunches eaten by 10am

I remember a long stone wall (outside the cathedral) with lots of taps. You could fill bottles with Holy water (blessed)

I bought a fake brandy glass with fake brandy that disappeared when you "drank" from it. And a notepad that looked like a sandwich. I don't think I bought anything religious..

Knock airport (IWAK) is 19km from Knock village (shrine).... not really that close.
For a visit it really depends what you like or are into... the west is well equipped for outdoor adventures.. walking, cycling, hiking, swimming and surfing..
A visit to any of the islands is well recommended for something very different.. Clare Island, Inishturk and Inisboffin are a different world..

Well you realise that the same people voted for gay marriage and passed other referenda.

I think most people who are Catholic are far removed from the very rigid type of faith. They are pragmatic about life.

Far removed from Catholic teachings. 🤷‍♀️

Far removed from Catholic teachings.

People see that the real message is about bringing people together and that the true message was and is about loving our neighbour.
The man made rules and regulations are a side dish..often left there.

I'm sure that the Knock shrine would be an inspiration and an excellent place for quiet meditation 🧘
