Really genuinely dead dead scary films

A German film called Funny Games, I used to have it on video and I had a mate round here to watch it once and he could'nt see it out till the end  :D

Is that the one set in the living room? When I say living room, I mean, a family living room?

I saw Hammer's 'House of Blood' or 'House that bleeds' whatever it was called when I was about 11 - blood coming out of the pipes in the ceiling etc - for about 6 months after, I would stare at the ceiling expecting pipes to start spurting, shitting a brick.

I soooo should not have been watching it - lax dadding at the time - but hey, when you have an older brother that's what happens.

Do not watch alone:
Japanese Ringu or Carrie

Yep, those hammer films scared the shit outta me - very popular when I was a lad...my folks had thought I'd falled asleep, so left me while the film was on...I got this weird trippy, dreamy, real mix of all the films.

The blood in the pipes one will always stick with me - and the hitchhiker bloody one...brrrrrrr....

Event Horizon scared me as did The Grudge. I bought the dvd box set which has all the old Hammer movies on it. They are still v.spookey, especially the werewolf one with Diana Dors in it

Actually, good thought. I might watch some Hammer now seeing as I'm alone in the house tonight!

Salems Lot and The Grudge scared the hell out of me also The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Never got Don't Look Now, although the end bit is scary I thought the rest was arty farty.

Nigel Kneale's stuff was dead scary when I was a kid. I saw 'The Stone Tape' when it was shown on TV.

Quatermass and the Pit is almost as scary when you're a kid, dunno what it'd be like now, as I haven't seen it for decades, but it was intense then.

The Haunting is also excellent, as is the Exorcist if you've taken shitloads of acid before going to see it as I was unwise enough to do.

I found the film What Lies Beneath to be very scary with some nice twists.

However as many have already said, The Vanishing will never leave your mind once you have seen it.

Yeah, I thought What Lies Beneath was probably one of the best things Ford has done recently.

The Vanishing though - while it is genuinely creepy once you've watched it to the end, I'm not sure I would say it was scary whilst watching as such.

The Blair Witch Project
Don't Look Now
Suspiria

All good films Grouch, but not really dead dead scary. Ring far more so (original) and The Grudge (original) too.

You just wanted to draw attention to Suspiria - a great film neglected...brilliant sound/noise track.

First time I watched Jacob's Ladder I was terrified. Had to keep leaving the room. But I had had a bit of a bad trip a couple of weeks before and was very stoned whilst watching it.

Yep, I was wondering when someone was going to mention this.

I was into the "pink floyd wall" acid trips at the time, which resounded hard with this film. Same with you?

Fear like you don't want it at all.

Those shaky heads in the corner of the room... faces on the tube...

*shits self*

I've heard that T.H.R.E.A.D.S is supposed to be horrific but i've never found the bloody thing.

That film is proper wrong.

:(

Out of all of them that one probably caused me more sleepless nights than most - watched it in school as part of an RE lesson ?? watching it a few months ago prompted a fresh batch of nightmares too.

Jacob's Ladder, The Stone Tape - good choices.

I also saw The Stone Tape as a kid - would love to see it again, despite finding it scary.

I found Candyman and The Others a bit creepy despite not usually being scared by films.

The Decent really scared me when i saw it. Audition is pretty nasty. Oldboy made me feel weird so did Straw Dogs.

But, if you want to read something scary have a go at reading this guys journal. Its quite long and slow at the start but try and read it in a oner, alone, at night. Its scary because it true.

i read that on my own in my new house at about 2am this morning and it worked a treat  most scary was the bit where he describes being in that teeny weeny hole  and that wasnt even the scary bit.

reminded me of an old H P Lovecraft story of a man who digs into the cliff under his house and finds . . . well, things
