Protester beaten up at Manchester Chinese consulate

Yossarian

⏭️
I thought this was worthy of its own thread - going to be a total disgrace if the government doesn't react firmly to the Chinese consulate's thugs abducting and assaulting this protester.

Unidentified men came out of the consulate and forced a man inside the compound before he escaped with the help of police and other demonstrators.
The protester told the BBC: "They dragged me inside, they beat me up."

If this isn't dealt with swiftly, directly and fiercely, the future bodes (even more,) ill for the UK.

But first, please educate yourselves in our Confucius Institutes - deeply embedded into your universities - and, of course, you're always welcome to visit one of your local town's CCP police stations.

And then, if you stop in on the United Nations (or even take a trip into social media,) you will find a preponderance of countries and influencers supporting the CCP (many billions of USDs have been invested over many, many years).

Nah! Nothing to see here. Right?

Oh mercy me!

No updates on this today.

I imagine the government is too busy dealing with self-inflicted crises and general chaotic disorganisation to make any sort of response.

Wasn’t there literally a debate in the commons on it today, at which a government minister provided an update (something like it will be handled robustly but must be done though the usual diplomatic system which takes time).

Here we go:

‘“The foreign secretary has issued a summons to the Chinese charge d’affaires at the Chinese embassy in London to express His Majesty’s Government’s deep concern at the incident, and to demand an explanation for the actions of the consulate staff,” Norman said during an emergency debate granted by Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle. Tory MPs pressured the minister to clarify whether the Chinese consul general and other Chinese officials could be expelled from the U.K. if they are found to have committed an offence under British law. Norman insisted ministers must first wait for a formal investigation by Greater Manchester Police to conclude.’

"Beware! Slippery surface! Whitewash ahead!"

Wake up peeps. Fast.

Another relevant story:

"China opens unofficial police stations in Britain to hunt down people for their return"

China has opened unofficial police stations in London as part of a growing network of Communist Party-linked offices accused of hunting down and blackmailing Chinese citizens to force them to return home.

Chinese authorities have established 54 “overseas police service centres” around the world in the last few years, according to a new report, as Beijing seeks to expand Chinese powers abroad.

The “110 overseas service stations”, named after the national police emergency phone number in China, were established by local public security bureaus in China, initially as part of an effort to target telecom fraud abroad.

But the growth of the informal police stations come as China is accused of harassing political dissidents on foreign soil, including in the UK. There is no evidence the “police stations” have been used for this purpose.

They are operated by Chinese community associations in various countries, according to a report released this week by Safeguard Defenders, a non-profit organisation.

The police “service centres” are often run from innocuous locations – such as Chinese restaurants or convenience stores, or the offices of business associations.

One of the two police “service” stations in London is registered as an estate agency. Another one based in Glasgow is a Chinese restaurant.

The Telegraph visited the estate agency in north London, which denied any links. But they said the office is also used by a legal firm. Its website says it deals predominantly with Chinese immigration issues.

And meanwhile ...

This has been going on for, at least, six years.

First ... join the RAF and learn to fly a fighter jet. Then fly to exotic places, encounter interesting people and kill them.

Second ... get headhunted to go to an exotic place. They will pay you a salary of @ GBP 250,000 a year and (on top of that,) give you a big house to live in, house servants, a car and driver, education for your children (at the best International private schools,) and generous expenses to help things along - and big, big bonuses if you perform well.

Third ... All you have to do is (live under 24/7, 360 degree, professional, total-surveillance and constant, daily, subtle interrogation and influence by "friends" from expert security services and ... ) teach a few dozens of highly trained exotic people to fly fighter jets better than the RAF and other western countries pilots can, in order to kill them.

Simples right?

The UK Ministry of Defence says that, to it's knowledge, no confidentiality rules have been breached.

(Errrr. Okaaaay ... )

Phew! Thank goodness everything's okay then. I guess.

Brits can all sleep safely in their beds now.

Good night one and all.

Rest well(ish?) peeps.

(Edit: By the way ... does anyone know who Ben Wallace is? And does anybody know who has been the UK Defence Secretary for the last few years?)

It's fucked how the UK left is so totally divorced from Hong Kong solidarity stuff that I don't even really know where I'd begin to look to find out if there's more stuff being organised in response to this. I would hope that the organisers aren't going to be intimidated and that their reaction will be to go back to the consulate some time soon, but buggered if I have any idea where I'd find out about what they're doing.

I've seen rallies announced on this page.

Cheers - I found this for Manchester but it looks like the page has been dead for a year:

And this which I think may be an AWL front (which isn't even necessarily a diss, good on them for at least making the effort), and also looks like it's not that frequently updated:

I think a lot of stuff is organized in private Telegram groups etc, - people have a very justified fear of repercussions for family members still in Hong Kong if they are too public with their activism.

Indeed, many of the new arrivals who try to engage one another by joining groups on Facebook and WhatsApp are quick to realize that any talk of politics would be the exception, not the norm. "When we meet up, we only talk about which restaurants to go to, where to do shopping or look for a nice flat. No one feels safe enough to share political thoughts with strangers who’ve just known each other,” said Carol, a recent migrant who works in the tech industry. “There’s a lot of mutual suspicion.”

As Lau puts it: “Fear is a major thing, because you know you are never safe. Even in the U.K. there are spies or undercover from the [Chinese Communist Party] and because I still have friends and family back in Hong Kong, I am always aware of this.” Indeed, even many of Lau’s cohort — ex-politicians who had a track record of speaking up — are keeping their heads down. Dozens of other pro-democracy politicians are currently taking refuge in Britain, but many of them refuse to talk to the media — or even publicly acknowledge the fact they’ve emigrated.

“We don’t know what might happen to our family members if we become too high-profile here [in the U.K.],” said one former elected politician, who now works as a waiter and prefers not to be named. “It’s better for us to lie low.”

Four protesters were dragged onto the consulate grounds, according to this report.

The protestors said they had checked with police that it was okay to display the image on the public footpath.

The consulate, however, wanted the image taken down and after the protestors resisted their attempts five men emerged dressed in riot gear and took down the image of Xi. They then dragged four protestors onto consulate premises and footage then shows Bob being surrounded by the group and beaten on the ground.

“I feel empty,” Bob said, speaking via telephone from Manchester Hospital where he said he had been waiting 11 hours to have his injuries treated. He said he had bruises across his back, arms, neck and face and that he had been bleeding from wounds to his face following the alleged assault. He said the men ripped some of his hair from his scalp.

“I was just thinking how to protect myself and get myself out of the gardens because when I am in their garden they can do whatever they want to me in there,” he said.

James Cleverly rather unconvincing on this topic on Sky News this morning. Hopefully the China hawks in his party will sort him out.

Unless of course we have certain “diplomats” in China we really don’t want to be tit-for-tat expelled right now.

How very different from the those brave flyboys and girls who sacrifice everything to help our plucky underdog allies and fellow bastions of liberty and human rights (checks notes) Saudi Arabia...

"The rule-of-law system with Chinese characteristics has made progress, an official said at a 20th party congress press conference on Wednesday."

"He added that authorities will in future “derive great energy from Xi Jinping Thought on the rule of law in comprehensively advancing law-based governance.”

I'm not sure that "rule of law" means what you seem to think it means.
