Poly Styrene/X-Ray Spex

Maggot

The Cake of Liberty
A heads up that a new Poly Styrene documentary I am a Cliche is on Sky Arts this Saturday (6 March ) at 9pm.

But also feel free to talk about how brilliant she was.

As a bonus White Riot, a Rock Against Racism doc is on straight afterwards.

Yep, got that in the diary. I've got an all day on line festival before that which thankfully finishes at 9.00.

Didn't know about White Riot being on again, so  . That Victoria Park RAR gig was the only time I saw X-Ray Spex live, and the only time I saw the Clash too.

We had a team Teams call today (Friday). One of those work "just a chat to keep in touch" chats. The usual "what's everyone up to this weekend?" question was asked.

I explained that I was going to be watching the Poly Styrene film. No one knew what I was taking about. Which is really sad.

Colleagues/people I work with who are almost mates (even those just ten years younger than me) really did google "Polystyrene Film" and were completely baffled as to wtf I was on about.

This should probably on the "things that make you feel old thread"

That was a mad day! There was a lot of violence in my life in these years.

I didn't see any violence that day, myself. I was 15 and lived in the sticks. I didn't go on the march - only just got to Victoria Park in time for Patrick Fitzgerald. But, yeah, know what you mean, and have scars to prove it.

I'm not sure if the amount of violence has ever been written about, I'm sure it must be somewhere. Not just that Victoria Park event , which for me turned into a bit if a riot. There ones that made the news like Brixton, Lewisham, Notting Hill, Fucking Welling :D and don't forget the bank holidays rucks!

We had a small riot up Bromley high Street every Saturday afternoon for about a year lol. Then there was a huge one at Crystal palace , one in shortlands just outside Bromley, in Croydon, Folkstone... People died and as I was usually the only girl there I got asked to help a lot. Which was a bit confronting.

Sid Vicious locked her in a cupboard. Yet another reason to hate Sid Vicious and like Paul Weller for knocking him out and putting him in A&E.

i had a brief encounter with mr vicious once when working the door at a gig, or rather with the woman with him who had quite quickly replaced nancy spungeon.
neither came off as attractive personalities.

back on topic, i believe i have an x-ray spex 45 on pink vinyl, but have to find it to see if my memory serves anymore.

I snogged sid on more than one occasion :D about a year ago at work something something was being talked about and i mentioned this to a colleague. She was so impressed 🤣 and now she always introduces me as the woman who snogged sid   :hmm::facepalm: :D

yyyyyyyyyup that's the disc!

i'm at the door and he and the other one come in and try to walk past. i say "hold on, i have to stamp your hand" (= your name isn't on the VIP list, so). a higher-up come by and says "it's okay let him in" and she turns back towards me and yells "I BET THAT GUY FEELS LIKE AN ASSHOLE NOW."

i stopped sid vicious and made him wait. :D

he himself was zombified during the whole interaction.

Legend 👏

I've got so many stupid punk stories. Just being in the right places at the right time. It's been a bit of a theme in my life. My kids think I should have " the devil looks after his own " tattooed somewhere.

My karate maniac boyfriend was a bouncer, seco at the greyhound too ( and his identical twin, they were a bloody urban legend unto themselves too :D ) So we always spent the day/weekend with all the different bands that came through. And you know I can't think of even one punk band that actually didn't play there? They ended up having to close the place cos all the pogoing was actually bringing the old ballroom floor/roof down

This is great news.. the fundraising to get this film made has been ongoing for a while. Have loved poly styrene and x-ray spex for decades..

This should probably be in a 'things that make you feel relevant' thread... Feminism, identity politics, anti-capitalist and consumer society critiques..
Up the punks
I am a cliche 😀

There was a brief shot of a poster saying: 'In a world of Kardashian, be Poly Styrene'.

When I searched it it seems to be a thing - lots of people's names came up to be instead of a Kardashian! But I think in her case it is especially apt, somehow.

Great discussion :) ... will get back to all the above posts very soon.

But specific question :

I know we can get Sky Arts on Freeview now, but for an unknown reason, we completely messed up a while back when trying to get the White Riot, a Rock Against Racism documentary (when it was first shown on Sky Arts) up to view again ..... :(

Is there a quick and easy way with Sky Arts, of getting the Poly Styrene film and White Riot?

As if we were on iPlayer and selecting BBC4 music documetaries that we'd missed?

Cheers :)

(ETA a couple of edits to clarify ;) )
