Patience (C4)

danny la rouge

I have a cheese grater in the dishwasher.
Based on the beloved, though strangely pitched and flawed, Astrid et Raphaëlle.

I’d been waiting for it, but then missed the fact that 4 episodes have dropped on whatever the C4 player is called these days.

This thread is to remind me, then to discuss it.

Hated it, I've detailed why in the "TV shows other than Netflix etc." thread.

I am Autistic btw.

My hatred mostly summed up by the following:

  • There's a hint of "Isn't everyone a bit on the Spectrum though?" about it - No.
  • Clichés about autistic people not so much abound, as run rampant throughout the entire thing - we don't all fucking love puzzles and hate physical contact, fuck off
  • Another Autistic character comes out with the classic line "So I decided to do what a Neurotypical would do" - er fuck no, it doesn't work like that and it sums up the problems with the portrayal
  • The plot of the whole thing is just pretty poor, and the dialogue isn't great
  • At the end Patience smiles as she is being hugged by a small child - oh goodness, maybe she can learn to be more "normal" after all
  • And we're not all fucking miserable and tormented all the time

Pros:
- The external shots of York were nice, I love York, it's one of my favourite places in the world

Have you seen the French original? (Sorry if this repeats what you’ve said elsewhere).

It did sound a bit cringe. I won't bother in that case.

I suppose well-meaning, clumsy representation is necessary in some cases, in order for things to evolve. But I'm not sure this is that.

Glad there's a thread for this as well.

Was so looking forward to it as Ella Maisy Purvis (Patience) was in A Kind Of Spark which I absolutely loved and was also such a good representation for Autistic people from the author of the book to the three main lead actresses :) So happy at Autistic actors playing autistic parts and any parts out there forming the basis of a show.

Anyway, probably a pre subjective view of knowing I would like it automatically so hard to be critical/recognise any bot so good things.

Saw the 1st two last week but haven't caught 3&4 yet as swapped to Traitors live 9pm. Thought it was good and the two parter was good with the mystery of the murders then felt a bit rushed even with the perpetrator garnering sympathy for why they did it.

Haven't seen Astrid but saw that mentioned elsewhere and need to watch it also :)
