Ozark finale - SPOILERS

beesonthewhatnow

going deaf for a living
Right. The title said spoilers. There will inevitably be some. If you're reading this and then moan because you haven't watched it yet, you're a muppet.

Seriously. Stop reading if you haven't watched it yet.

So.

Blimey. That was a bit good. I'm sad about Ruth, but then it's nice to have a show where things don't get neatly wrapped up in a happy ending. Money and power wins though. It's been a fantastic show that deserves a lot more praise than it initially got - I think the "breaking bad with trees" jibes made at the start are rather lazy and sell the writing way too short.

I love the “the ending was Wendy’s dying fantasy as she got killed in the car crash” theory but I get that means I have to put on my clown shoes.

Thought it was a dogshit ending.

Wendy should have been offed. Her whole sarcastic irony had worn thin and she was too much of a shit to get away with it all.

Also ripped off the Sopranos/Breaking Bad heavily.

Generally felt the final season was poor and far too long messed about with the characters too much yada yada. Shite.

She got away with it because she was a shit. The shits win, they run the world. It was a dark ending and better for it.

Marty offing her to save the family would have been much darker. Introduced (and reintroduced) too many characters as lazy maguffins too.

Severe dip in quality that final season was, bar maybe 3/4 episodes. I was bored and didn't care what happened by the end.

It's the Last Jedi and GoT season 8 all over again.

My thoughts entirely. By the end I just wanted it to be over.

Well i know the ending may have been more "realistic" but i think most viewers would prefer a "happy" ending where ruth survives and wendy dies. Nobody wants depressing reminders of real life. I think some writers try to be clever with their endings and fuck it up. Critics might like that but most viewers hate it.

Anyway with ruth being dead, the casino had her name on it so that must fuck up the fbi deal? So maybe wendy doesn't get to run her networking club for scummy politicans and rich businessmen after all? :hmm:

I gave up in the final season, think the first couple of seasons were pretty good, it then just got more unbelievable and the main characters increasingly unlikeable.

I liked the first half of ozark s4 and the first episode of part 2 was also good. It went a bit downhill after that.

I hope better call saul doesn't fuck up in it's second half (been excellent so far)

This. It was pretty obvious towards the second half of the final season they where struggling to bring it all together (lots happened that was pointless filler and didn't really make a lot of sense). It all went downhill after the Ruth killing Javi scene really. The tone and narrative jarred and was completely different to the entire series so far.

Ending it without the final act was a lazy out. Glossing it over by blatantly ripping off other classic series endings was the giveaway.

The characters had been written so one dimensionally unlikeable that it became lazy to not have a comeuppance of sorts. It didn't work at all.

That they didn’t give viewers exactly what they want is why I liked it.

Something that permeated the show in most seasons was the whole Ozark thing - the brooding lakes, and their locals. People doing things by the water's edge and on the water. Seems they forgot about that towards the end, even the casino and Ruth's trailer and the Byrd house could have been anywhere rather than by the lake, which everyone seemed to disregard.

I didnt think the show was anything special at first, but actually think it got better and better and has ended at a peak. I like how it was so character driven. And yeh the ending, definitely no ambiguous copout, but also no OTT blowup, which was cool, just pure mundane darkness. The last episode before the midseason break was prob the peak for energy though.

Sorry. It never occured to me that GOT spoilers were still needed 2 years after the final was shown.

Yeah i was trying to describe the worst possible GOT ending i could think of as an example of how ozark ended. But no GOT doesn't end like that, although its fair to say the real ending was unpopular with a lot of fans. I didn't hate it as much as most people but it could have been a lot better.

Ozark finale was dark. But always magnificent performances from all, especially JG.

Quote from a vanity fair article on the finale;

Garner says she still hasn’t processed “that a piece of me, that a person that was with me for so long, is gone essentially.” Asked how it felt knowing that Marty and Wendy survived but not Ruth, the actor said, “I can’t speak on behalf of Ruth, because she was dead by then. But as a viewer, it reflects real life in a way. The middle class, the poor, the dreamers almost always pay for it in a sense. The superpowerful people with all the money, at the end, they do okay.”

Going to miss the show.

When Ruth is seeing the old characters outside her gaff was it Seasick Steve sitting down playing the guitar and singing? It certainly looked like him.

Enjoyed the ending - I wanted Ruth to win but never mind.

It's the same actor playing Ruth's uncle Russ Langmore.

Only watched the first episode so far then the person I was watching with went into hospital. They're out now so thinking of giving it another shot. I read somewhere it was cancelled so does it end properly?

Yes it has an ending and doesn't stop on a cliffhanger.

i did wonder what happens to Ruth's shares now. Not knowing the legal situation i can't even begin to speculate, but i'm guessing it won't be good for the Byrds.
