Open source raw processors? Any opinions?

Hi, It is time for me to properly use my raws rather than just converting them directly to jpgs ..

I am using GIMP, which I like, but it won't input my raw files.

Nikon offers some free software but I don't even want to be tied to Nikon.

So I am looking at the moment at:

Darktable

Raw Therapee

UFRaw

Anyone have any experience with these let me know please !! :)

I have been watching some video tutorials on Darktable, it seems quite capable.

I might download it and give it a try.

Are they working on/supporting Raw Therapee again? I used to use it a fair bit but the last time I updated it, admittedly a fair while ago, development had been stopped, so it was essentially unsupported security/features/sensors-wise.

Darktable - I have turned to it more recently and I do quite like it but TBH, since shelling-out for an Affinity licence, I find its RAW capacity very good, although there is a bit of a learning-curve involved!

Don't know UF-Raw.

Hi pogofish I have installed darktable and am learning how to use it.

It seems it can do most things, and means I may not use GIMP much anymore.

Bit of time wasted learning how to use GIMP then, nevermind.

Darktable is very useful for whittling down a lot of photos into a few which to go on to edit. Culling I think they call it, I like that.

I use the free version of Narrative for culling my RAW files before importing them into Lightroom. Any star rating you give them shows up in Lightroom. It's good that if I was shooting more than I currently do I'd probably pay for the full version. I've included a referral link below which will give me credits towards getting the Pro version if 4 people sign up :)

Hi Nivag I am getting comfortable with darktable now. My raws are 30mb each but it blitzes through hundreds of them with seeming no delay. I have found it can apply a custom curve (Nikon D800) my camera which means I don't have to muck about with boosting exposure.

At first I thought, my raws are all dull and washed out! They are, especially compared to jpegs but a few actions can bring them to life. I am new to raw editing. For the last 35 years I effectively had a jpeg work flow.
