Online photo storage recommendations?

nightowl

Another day on that hamster wheel we call life
BT Cloud is shutting down so I've got to find somewhere to move all my pictures. Any recommendations?

Is this just storage for backup, or is it for viewing? And just viewing by you, or open to anyone?

I'll have to check the space as I haven't looked at BT Cloud for a while. Mainly as a backup. Hate to think of all the pics of the kids etc disappearing if something apocalyptic happened to the computer.

Although it isn't, strictly speaking, cloud storage, I would suggest Ipernity.
It's not that expensive.
Member-owned / managed photo-hosting site. [I've been a member since 2013]

I use Google Photos free and pCloud. pCloud is just for storage rather than viewing and sharing. Google is 15gb free shared with Gmail and Drive neither of which I use.

I pay £1.59 a month for Google Drive.

I like how good the search is, I can specify my dog and one of my cats and it's goes of and gets those photos. Or photos taken in a certain location. Or ones with mountains etc

That sounds cool .. how much space do you get?

Google looks good. Anyone know if you can transfer photos directly from another online storage service or whether you have to download them from the latter and then add them? Can't see anything on Google about transferring from elsewhere.

I've never heard of that being a 'thing'. There may be 3rd party software for this.
I don't think many (any?) online storage places would be willing to allow their api to be used to let customers leave.

It's actually worse than that. One of the nice things about Google Drive, is that it can be installed on your PC as another drive with all the files kept in sync with other devices you've got it installed on.

This used to be true for Google Photos as well, making additional backups very easy. Now they've removed that part. You can still download everything you've got in Google Photos, but it's much more of a faff for regular sync jobs than it used to be. Obviously this is only an issue if you take most of your photos on your phone which uploads straight to Google Drive.
