Found this at a car boot sale for 20p :)

On the back is written Bristol Docks & Key 1949 albeit in the photograph you can see Glasgow. Can anybody confirm the location?

My initial thought seems to be right...

Looks like it was taken on Narrow Quay

You can make out the same buildings (and tree) in these shot form 1962 and 1965.

The buildings behind are tabacco warehouses on Canons Marsh, now replaced by Lloyds Bank HQ

e2a: reckon the building with 'GLASGOW' written on it may be 'T Shed'

Fascinating. I cannot remember what was there before the Lloyds Ampitheatre was built, although it is a relatively recent building.

I first started going down to the docks in the 1980s to watch the power boat racing, but my memories of the buildings are very hazy.

What an excellent thread. It starts off with a quite dramatic photograph that is intriguing then more information is added, along with other images and finally the puzzle is solved and a piece of history studied. Well done everyone. Can we get Arts Council funding for a Stowpirate Foundation?

It was a beautiful photograph and just could not resist buying it. Old photographic plates is the one thing I have not yet found ;)
