new to Brixton - recommendations

Hi all

Myself and the mrs just moved into a flat off Brixton Hill (near The White Horse). I'm from Hackney, figure if I can only afford to live in a box might as well be one near a tube station. I've also really liked coming to the area to visit friends, for gigs, nights out + etc... in the past.

So far not too much of a culture shock moving from one gentrifying area to another - had very mixed feelings about it happening in Hackney as I'm sure many of you do here for Brixton.

I'm hoping some seasoned locals can help me out. I lived in Hackney my whole life with a brief period in Bow while at Uni. I know Brixton a bit, but there are several things that would be great to have recommendations on...

1. A decent but not too expensive gents hairdressers (my one in Hackney charged £15)
2. A good cafe/restaurant for a late hungover full Engish (+ veggie options) on a Sunday. Trendy enough to know how to poach an egg, not so trendy everything's gluten free and served on rye bread
3. Indian takeaway
4. Turkish/mediterranean restaurant/takeaway
5. Garage that won't rip me off
6. Fish & Chips
7. Pub for watching football that has BT & Sky
8. Any other restaurants/takeaways you think should be part of my staple diet as a Brixtonian.

Ideally as close to where we are as possible (except for takeaways as long as they deliver here).

Many thanks in advance.

Try Curry Paradise on Brixton hill for Indian.

Cheers - that's very close so considered it but wanted to know a consensus before ordering.

Thanks editor - was looking more for specific recommendations than general guides to everything going on as I have perused some of those lists previously.

Garage - Hearn Brothers right next to the White Hart is excellent. They've done various things for me over the last 10 years as well as servicing my car every year and have always done a great job

Welcome!
Second Hearne Bros Garage. Matt and his team are lovely. I've been using then for 15 years. If you drop your keys off they'll pick up your car, do the work, drop it back and keys through the letter box. That's what I call service!

I don't eat curries much but think that khans on Brixton water lane I'd slightly better than curry paradise.

Recent new fish and chippy on acre lane, Brixtons rock is IMHO better than Olleys in Herne hill. Massive portions, 1 fish 1 chips and a mushy peas feeds two of us adults!

The hairdresser opposite you, naz?, is used occasionally by Mr SB. He says they do a very thorough job for @ £12. Christine's on your side is cheaper, but perhaps not quite as good. Mr SB has a no 1 so can't comment on styling!!!

P's looks like a new coffee shop is opening up in the old furniture shop on the arodene road corner..

I like Curry Paradise, but I prefer Khan's on Brixton Water Lane.

We live the Herne Hill side of Brixton which influences my responses somewhat but here are my suggestions as a long-term resident:

1. For haircuts, the Mr likes the new Kurdish barber under the bridge in Herne Hill, so a walk through the park. They also do proper wet shaves.
2. Cafe Max opposite the rec for cheap and cheerful and the best value coffee in town. Lido cafe for a more gourmet experience. My favourite is the lack pudding with roasted tomatoes.
3. Khan's
4. Not Turkish but the Moroccan place on Brixton Station Rd does fantastic grilled meats and a mean falafel.
5. We've used A&M on Railton Rd for years. Reasonable and excellent.
6. No comment
7. I actively avoid pubs with Sky
8. Pizzeria Pellone in Herne Hill. £6 lunch (weekdays) at the Prince Regent

I tried Brixton Rock for the first time on Friday night. It doesn't even compare to Kennedy's in Streatham Hill. Not too much of a trek for you, and worth the 5 min bus journey up the hill for you. Try Kennedy's at least once.

I second the Effra Hall. Possibly my favourite pub in London. Reminds me of a typical Queen Vic interior, with a Caribbean twist. Pints of Red Stripe and Sunday roast with plantain and Encona hot sauce.

Haircut wise I go to Haircut Sir where Brixton Water Lane meets Tulse Hill, opposite the Sainsbury. The guy who works there does a really good job, followed by a tidy up with a bit of a lather, cut throat and a puff of talc. Tidies up my eyebrows and ears too. £8, but I usually give him a tenner. He was on holidays two haircuts ago and his dad did the job. Quite a poor cut, accompanied by a stream of shit about how immigrants shouldn't be allowed in, interspersed with his tales of moving over here from Cyprus. So try to avoid that.

For Turkish food it's FM Mangal on Camberwell Church Street, because when you sit down they bring you this starter on the house which is one of the best things in the world ever.

Maybe i need to give Kennedys another go then! Last few times I tried then the chips were inedible. Mind you must be a few years back now!

Streatham Hill has the answer to 4 and 6 in Troy (they deliver) and Kennedys (don't think they do).
And 5 is right on your doorstep..the guys in Hearn Brothers next to the White Horse are great.

.

"The Lounge" in Atlantic road near Dogstar. Been around for long time. I like it. They are open Sundays from 11. Do veggie options.

Thanks a lot everyone! Been a little busy over Xmas so not checked back, wasn't expecting so many helpful responses.

Have had dinner in the lounge twice and been in for a drink in Effra Hall. Will have to check the former for brunch and the latter for footy. Garage, haircut, Turkish and Indian tips also all greatly appreciated. Will explore all suggestions in the thread, plenty of time to try em all.
thanks again
