Motty retires

Well, it was goodbye in terms of live commentary, he is still doing match of the day stuff till the end of the season.

I'm not mr football but I tuned in for his final live commentary anyway. It was good, apart from one cringeworthy/not of this era moment where he called someone covering a different game darling.

When there was very little live football, he was the Commentator, always preferred him over Barry Davies, David Coleman and Brian Moore. Loved the Sheepskin coats too, always wanted one when i was a kid  never got one :(

I've no personal experience of him, but I remember him being mentioned as a cunt by a poster who a few years back. Surprised me at the time, as he seemed quite amiable.

A quick urban search has him as a strike breaker and Pie 1 describes him as:
"Just horrible.
Imagine the most awful old skool , sneering golf club bigot who also happens to be famous & thinks the that the whole world is at the (literal) click of his fingers.

Awful man."
:D

I listened to it. It was terrible. He said he hadn’t done a live commentary for a year and it showed. He was heavily dependent on Steve Claridge for little details like players names and it was full of insights such as “ and here’s, er Watford, going down the right wing and he’s, er, no no, no he hasn’t...”. And that “darling” comment was the icing on the cake of cringe.

Should have stopped a year ago. You know, when he “retired” first time.

OK I probably shouldnt have said 'it was good', but I suppose I wasnt really treating it like any other commentary. Certainly now I think about it, there was an absence of the play-by-play commentary normally associated with radio, and was more like tv commentary where you can get away with saying less because everyone at home can see whats happening.
