Michael Owen retires

Is he too proud to drop down a division or two? There is a certain arrogance about him, the brochure didn't do his cause any favours.

I was just going to say, at one point he looked very good to break that record, very possibly completely butcher it.

Isn't he often used as an example of a player who was overused early on in their career and that had a detrimental effect to their later career? Would be interested as to how that compares with someone like Giggs, who was also well known for his blistering pace, but hasn't suffered with injuries in the same way and has managed to change his game to keep playing.

I wondered that, but Wiki says Giggs was played shitloads from his first full season onwards. Games played in his first few seasons - 51, 46, 58, 40, 44. Owen - 44, 40, 30, 46, 43.

As for it being weird remembering Owen's debut now that he's announced his retirement, that's nothing. I'm not even all that old and I can remember the first goal a promising skinny lad called Rush scored for Liverpool in a European Cup match. Wonder what happened to him etc

Can you remember Ian Callaghan's debut, too?

Never quite took to him, but he was very, very good in his day. Is a bit sad he never ended up one of the all time greats. Thought it was a good move coming to united and that we'd get a bit more out of him. Partly the injuries stopped all that, but he also seemed happy enough to cruise along on the bench/taking home the money. Might have thought he'd asked for a transfer 18 months before he did to get some real football in his twilight. Berbatov should have gone for that transfer 12 months earlier, but at least he's getting some pitch time and scoring a few.

sadly, his toon period did rankle with me- an awful lot of money for a player who for whatever reason, proved to be really poor vfm - probabaly Shepherds fault for flogging them a crocked Woodgate in the first place - I cant imagine anyone else paying £18M / £100K a week for him after Madrid

Always got the feeling he only joined Newcastle with the sole intention of keeping his England place rather than any great desire to play for the barcodes, fucked off pretty sharpish when they went down in 2009.

I cant really blame him though - I cant imagine he was too chuffed at going to fortress Sid James - he never seemed to have the commitment that the fans appreciate up there- and they can be hard to please- though utterly devoted if you do crack them.

Massive twat...not only because he was as one dimensional as Aaron Lennon, just had 'that' moment that has earned him a lifetime of people wasting their time reading about his next absurd contract negotiation revolutionising the 'pay as you play' deal, obviously interrupting his trips between whatever thigh twinge specialist that has a line of Porsches outside his gaff named after him, and the bookies (that has a fleet of super yachts).

I don't envy people who a earn a lot of money...but there's a few who I do begrudge because they're just too plain dull to deserve telephone number salaries. Owen is arguably the worst for this.

Michael Owen crushed my dreams and made me realise I'm not good enough to be a footballer. :D
