Michael Parkinson RIP

One of the things about Parkinson was the standard of his interviews and discussions, not just his but often his guests. I liked his shows because the discussion was always going to be interesting, stimulating and enjoyable and with a variety of guests, normally top notch . He could play the straight man as with Rod Hull and Emu or with Les Patterson for example, or there was the occasion when he had Kenneth Williams and Jimmy Reid (from the UCS sit in) discussing workers' pay where he called something that Williams said 'rubbish' .He also got taken to task brilliantly by Helen Mirren over his sexism in saying that her body and looks meant that she faced problems being taken as a serious actress . Perhaps it is nostalgia but the series seemed to want to engage its audience on an adult level.

Founder member of the Anti Nazi League as well.
