Messi retires from international football, age 29

Lord Camomile

Yipchaa!
He's done a Scholes!
Lionel Messi announced his retirement from international duty after missing in a penalty shootout as Argentina lost a fourth major final in nine years.

"It's not meant for me. For me the national team is over. I've done all I can, it hurts not to be a champion," the 29-year-old said after defeat by Chile at the Copa America.

A rash decision? Unclear as to whether he's been planning it.

It would be a massive shame if so, but he does seem to carry the weight of the nation on his shoulders and it's clear it's too much. I was hoping for his sake that they won yesterday, he may be a tax cheat but on the pitch the guy's a class act and deserves some international recognition.

Flouncing because a tournament didn't go his way and he's never been able to drag the Argentinian team up in the way Maradona did.

Talented he may be but he's got no bottle

Seems like him and Ronaldo are competing to be the biggest bellend alongside biggest footballer.

Ronaldo is a dick on the pitch, off he ain't though is he?

Petty sure he's had plenty of global recognition for many years. And shit loads of cash too.
His team/country needs him and he's flouncing off because One Is Not Happy With One's Performance. Twat.

Obviously don't know what he's like in private, but just going off the attitude more than anything, nobody should be that pleased with themselves :D Although I did enjoy the microphone / lake interaction as it was a Sun-equivalent rag journalist annoying him.

Messi seems like he'd dig you in the kidneys before nicking the ball and dribbling past 8 players, Ronaldo would just straight up muscle you off the ball and then smirk at you like a dick after scoring.

Yh can't disagree with that. I dunno I just have massive man love for the guy, if you watch football these days you kinda have to turn a blind eye to a lot of shite to enjoy the game. Our own Gareth Bale for instance, aye a Welsh legend but also man likes a dive and plays for Real Cunting Madrid.

Messi ain't played his last game. He'll be back.

tbf to Ronaldo, his supreme arrogance is part of what makes him so good. He has absurdly high levels of self-belief. I still think he's a twat, mind.

You can give money to charity and still be a total twat, mind.
Craig Bellamy, for example.

(Before that's seen as a complete non-sequitur, we had the same discussion years back and it always rankled that people seemed to think he was one or the other, saint or twat)

True, but the range of things he's given to and how he's done it, plus he way he's involved himself in all sorts of stuff beyond the minimal required suggests he may not be.
His ethics may be sound, but that won't necessarily stop him appearing to be an utter dick when it comes to his personality.

Indeed. Twat on the field, tireless and pleasingly modest campaigner off the field.

He's got that thorough undeserved player of the tournament award from the last World Cup to cherish. He wasn't even the best Argentina player there - Mascherano was.

What's his health like? Surely all this growth enhancement drugs will take a toll on his body at some point?

Wow.. wasn't expecting that. This would be a good year for an alien landing on the White House lawn, it would be less of a shock given everything else that's gone on.

Damn them releasing this verdict on the day of the Chilcot report, talk about burying bad news.

The risible Catalan newspaper Sport published a brilliant conspiracy theory rant last month claiming the Spanish government and judiciary were out to destroy F. C. Barcelona. I wonder what tomorrow's front page will be :D
