Are there any fans out there? I'm not, but I have a question to ask. I have bought tickets to see NY Yankees play when I go to New York, and I saw they play Cleveland Indians on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Why do they play each other over four days? I thought a match was 9 innings only? Do they drag it out over four days?

To save Cleveland coming down to NY on four seperate occassions they play four game sback to back.

Having been to a baseball game in SanFran years ago I thought it was the most boring sport in the world and that I had had a day of my life robbed from me. Howver I have been wtaching the postseason games on ESPN and have really got into it, sitting up til 5am over the weekend to watch games.

Anyone else out there watching as the Rangers and the Yankees, and Phillies and Giants compete to see who goes to the World Series?

I watched the Giants - Phillies game (from Sunday) last night.

Roy Oswalt had a stormer.

Still can't get used to seeing him in a Phillies uniform, though.

I saw the Yankees whup the Baltimore Orioles at home a few weeks ago. It was a fun night out :)
Bring your own booze in a hip flask or something though, cos the beer is frankly piss.

I haven't watched any MBL since my Uni days, but am I right in thinking C5 don't have the rights anymore?

When I was over in North America a few years ago I went to watch games in Toronto, Montreal and NYC (Yankees vs Red Sox on July the 4th, and the BoSox won) and found it a great atmosphere.

Yeah no channel shows baseball now over here except espn.

Is that Dirty Des' doing, or had C5 already dropped it when he took over?

Not sure, baseball was dropped from 5 in winter 08 i.e. we have now had 2 full seasons without any 5 coverage. When did Dirty Des take over.

PS - Who is Dirty Des?

Can someone please help me with a rules question.

I was looking at a video of an unassisted triple play, but I dont understand how the three batters were out, or atleast i dont understand how the second out was achieved. I understand that the batter is caught, so far so good, I understand that the third out is achieved as the runner attempts to get back to first base, but I do not understand how by stepping on second base the runner from 2nd to 3rd is out. I assumed it was because the runner could not run on an out(i.e the catch) and had to make it back to second base, but watching the Rangers playing the Yankees the Rangers achieved a run when a runner made home when a batter was caught. Which part am I not understanding?

No, he can run, but he can't take the base until AFTER the ball is caught. So if the ball is caught when he's running, he has to return to the base he started at or be given out when that bag is tagged.

BUT... if he starts running after the catch is made, he can advance if he beats the ball there. If a run is scored in this manner (or a runner moves up a base), it's called a sacrifice fly (ball) and the batter is still credited with an RBI in the event of a run.

Triple plays are pretty rare, so I'd have to see the video.

If the runner leaves the base he's on whilst the ball is in the air (i.e. before it was caught) then he has to return to that base.

He can advance - say with a fly out deep to the outfield - if he makes sure he's touching the base when (or after) the ball is caught. It's called "tagging up".

In the triple play example, there can also be examples where an advance to another base is forced or where two runners end up in the same place and so on. There was an unassisted triple play last year (?) I think where that sort of thing happened as part of it iirc - there are all sorts of oddities that come into the game at times (thinks: infield fly rule...).

Richard Desmond took over a couple of months ago. He's proprietor of the Express and Star newspaper titles, and loads of "celebrity" magazines including OK!. He initially made his fortune in pornography, with magazines with titles such as Asian Babes, The Very Best of Mega Boobs and Spunk Loving Sluts, and still owns Red Hot TV and Television X, as well as funding such films as "Cumdog Millionaire".

He claims not to be a pornographer and owes his Dirty Des moniker to Private Eye.

Let's face it, ESPN's coverage is far, far superior to Channel 5's.

Plus, if they say they're showing a live game, they don't tape delay it by an hour to show a 6 month old triathlon... or something equally exciting and important.

Thank god. I thought i was the only one. Have been watching it on fridays for a while now.

I've been watching ESPN's early evening showings of early games, and replays of night games all season. Can't really stay up for the live ones at 1 am any more.

Looking forward to seeing The Show over the next week or so, though. Again, will be watching as-live replays for weeknight games, so may not comment until later.

Cliff Lee vs. Tim Lineceum tonight, should be a good 'un...

I dont know what to do tonight. I have to be up at 6am for work, so its either stay up and try and watch the game and grab an hour before I get up, or try and get some sleep early doors and set alarm for 1am.

Deliberately not posting anything about game 1 until stupid has watched it!!

Loved the banner I saw last night "What they do big in Texas, San Francisco do Giant"

Well, seen games 1 and 2, now.

Game 1 wasn't was expected, Lincecum couldn't seem to get going to start with and Cliff Lee had a bit of a nightmare, too. Good win for SF, though, 10-7.

Game 2 was a cracker, a tight, tense pitching duel with both Matt Cain and CJ Rogers dishing super no-run ball until Renterria's HR in the 5th put SF ahead. It looked a tight game until the bottom of the eighth, where some inexplicable managing from Texas and 4 walks in a row - 2 walking in runs - killed the game off. 9-0 SF!!

Texas'll be looking forward to getting back to Arlington...

:D

Was also hoping to see Brian Wilson close, but no need. Loving the beards.

I can certainly watch games faster off Sky+ with ESPN as I skip the ads between innngs whereas I did enjoy the between inning stuff with JG and JC on 5. It's their input that I miss most now that 5 has gone.

True, I suppose. But having the coverage on at the time advertised, and actually seeing the first 3 innings is even better, imo.

Great series, anyway.

Super pitching from the Giants.

Ron Washington looked a bit lost trying to manage, and times when he should have done something (got someone up in the bullpen, brought in a pinch runner, put the game in motion, stolen a base), he looked frozen and unable to do anything.

Outplayed, outmanaged and outpitched.

Anyone watch Cubs-Cardinals from the Olympic Stadium earlier? It's available on the iplayer if you want to catch up, with the second of a two-game series on tomorrow.

The Beeb should try to get the rights for games for across the pond too, like C5 had back in the day.
