Magnificent railway stations

OK. just arrived today at Helsinki railway station - first time ever when not ripped to the gills after an all nighter in bars to catch the 06.30 to St Petersberg etc- what a fucking magnificent station. Spent time trying to educate the family about Finnish architecture, its granite echoing darkness of its finnish pagan folk culture etc. Lets have a thread of monolithic jaw dropping rail stations.shit pics not mine but you dig.

Interesting background:
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) formerly known as Victoria Terminus is a historic railway station and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India which serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways. The station has been designed by Frederick William Stevens according to the concept of Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival architecture and meant to be a similar revival of Indian Goth (classical era) architecture.

At Grand Central Station I sat down and posted a cliche. But it's a cliche for a reason.

Mind you I only got little commuter train from there to go about 20 miles up the coast. Sadly my New York to Orlando journey started at the slightly less romantic Penn ....

Chengdu's stations are pretty fine and work well. You also get the feeling there are lots like them and more to come.

Not sure if they still are, but a few years ago London Walks were offering guided tours of St. Pancras station. And back in January I went on a guided tour of the Renaissance Hotel, organised by Andrew Duncan of LEG.

Helsinki station is absolutely lovely. I'm, unsurprisingly, going to opt for a station in South East Europe, and say Keleti station in Budapest. (From the outside - it's grim inside.)

At the opposite end (mediocre outside, incredible inside), is the main station in Madrid, which has a botanical garden in the middle. Inside it feels like someone dropped a forest in St Pancras (similar structure and brickwork, as you can see.)
