Now i've never really taken much notice of Madonna, she's kind of always just been there. I remember when they showed the video of Like A Virgin on top of the pops and it was talk of the playground in my junior school.

However, just going through youtube watching her old videos and performances i realised what an awesome singer/performer she is.

Right from her first uk performance :-


to her latest single she's kept the quality pretty high i think

I saw her on the tour where she had the pointy tits - she was a good performer for sure. I can take or leave a lot of her stuff but some of the older tunes (especially the dance remixes) were great.
And she's gone down the fitness freak route, instead of the self medication route like poor Whitney and MJ.

That new video is a vast improvement on anything she has done in the last 20 years I think.

I love this performance, even though she is just miming on TOTP, but her dancing and charisma is great. Beyonce, Britney, Nicki Minge all have a long way to go to topple Madge. I know the word is hugely overused, but she is a true music legend.

That new video is a vast improvement on anything she has done in the last 20 years I think.

Dunno, Don't Tell Me (video above) was a great single, Beautiful Stranger, Music and Ray of Light were pretty good as well.

I think she's done some great stuff over the years. Some not so great too. But it's a long career and tbh compared to others over similar times she's done better than all/most at keeping her game up and provided as many classics as anyone else. Plus she's not implode with booze or drugs at any point which must be a frustration for the hacks. Probably gets more negative attention and less deserved recognition as some. That's the impression I get anyway.


I think this is the madonna I'd most like to be. probably my fave tune/video too.

And those old enough may remember how scandalous this video was when first released. Looks pretty tame now. One of the best (synthesized) drumbeats ever too, which was nicked from a white rap group called The Young Black Teenagers iirc


Edit: upon viewing again it is still pretty raunchy

true, often not a secret... theres an art in her imitation.. but a fair bit of exploitation in there too... who she really is is hard to know after all these years of chameleon reinvention/costume pantomime/style rehashing/ etc. Definitely a highly motivated hard working woman...what she's driven by Im not sure.... childhood death of her mother according to wiki.

My fav songs of hers are Vogue, Like A Prayer and Into The Groove. I saw her at Wembley years ago under the pretext of taking of taking my little sister along for her Xmas prezzy and she was totally ace. And my sister was coolest kid in school for a very long time afterwards.

I remember watching that Tube performance and thinking she was pretty great, but just another pop star. Granted, she's put on a great show over the years, but it's not for me. I can sing along in the car with the kids to most of her hits, but I'm never going to buy any of her music.

I do however, like the latest one. But that's because MIA could take a shit in my bed and call me a cunt and I'd still think she was the greatest artist of this century.

a friend of mine has tickets for this tour, and when she bought them earlier in the year she basically said words to the effect of 'i hope she makes it to/through the tour, because madonna is in a really bad way' ....I dont think this is something that has come out of the blue. i forget now exactly what she said but I think a bit like prince madonna was already in a lot of pain and taking serious doses of pain killers ...possibly relating to her hip replacement? <<not a great post, half remembered, but theres something in it.
