London Cycling Campaign said:
This weekend cyclists are being warned to take extra care when hundreds of 32-ton lorries pass through central London to The Shard building site near London Bridge station.

Starting during evening rush hour on Friday 16 April 2010, and lasting for 36 hours, almost 700 return lorry trips will continuously pour 12,500 tons of concrete into the foundations of Europe's largest building site.

LCC have a map of the routes being used.

I'm likely to be taking photos of the construction site at lunch time and then dodging lorries in the evening :)

Be careful out there.

Cyclists wouldn't need to "take extra care" if they rode safely in the first place, not riding on the wrong side of the road, dodging in and out of traffic, going through red lights etc, and actually respecting other road users that cannot stop, or move, as quickly as they are able to.

jesus christ.

Can't move as quickly?
Well, maybe it's time you purchase a bike and enjoy London more.

Thanks Cybertect.

London Bridge area, not only the worse for potholes and damaged roads, cyclists now have to contend with extra lorries

The warning is a good idea IMO. We get a lot of tipper trucks round here, AFAIK because of the aggregates landed at the Angerstein Wharf. Some of them are driven a bit aggressively, but equally, you still see a worrying number of cyclists shooting up the inside of them (in the driver's blind spot) and/or cutting in front, evidently forgetting that they're not very manoeuvrable and can't stop that quickly. There've been a few near misses and nasty accidents, not least involving a colleague of mine, who was lucky not to follow his bike under the wheels of a four-axle lorry a few years ago...

LCC article said:
9 March 2010 21 year-old student Haris Ahmed was killed by a four axle tipper lorry in Weston Street, near Guy’s Hospital. It is believed that the lorry had been servicing the massive Shard construction project next to London Bridge station. In recent months dozens of lorries a day have been queuing on roads around the site.

THAT is why cyclists should take extra care.

I enjoy London perfectly well from the safety of a bus or tube, thankyou. I have more respect for myself and those I love/love me than to put myself at risk on a bicycle.

Quite apart from the fact that my little upstairs flat is too small to put a bicycle in, and if it was left outside it wouldn't be there very long.

Evidently elementary physics eludes you, in the fact that a 40 ton lorry cannot stop as quickly, or change its direction, as easily as a bicycle can.

So you don't use a bike? Don't have a bike? And use the bus and tube?

So... why the fuck are you interested in a notice telling cyclists about an increase in lorries on certain routes?

Is it a) because you're a dick?
b) because you're consumed with an overpowering rage against cyclists who might offend your ideas as a non-cyclist of how people should cycle?
or c) because you want to tell the world how small your flat is?

I await more rivetting instalments of how completely unconnected you are to the subject matter being discussed.

Perhaps:

d) He's a lorry driver.

On reflection, maybe (a)

law abiding cyclists die more often, fuck knows it's been posted up here enough...@ajd

tommers, iirc he does actually ride a bike? takes all sorts i guess...

anyhow cheers for the heads up cybertect, forwarded to people who will appreciate it. :)

My uncles a lorry driver. And he's one of the soundest people I know. He has a tattoo of a naked women on his bicep and when he flexes it the tits get bigger :D

Why do you hate cyclists so much?
We're not all aggressive riders. We don't all carry huge steel chains around our necks and shout abuse/snarl at pedestrians who get in our way. Nor do we all jump every light possible and blindly ride against a one way traffic system.

Was your ex-partner a cyclist or something? Did s/he hurt your feelings?

who? aj? he just said "I have more respect for myself and those I love/love me than to put myself at risk on a bicycle."

I have no problem with lorry drivers either. Most of them have really got the message and, ime, are very careful and observant of cyclists around them.

has 'caz' left aj for a cyclist?

it may be me who got confused

and for what it's worth, if people want to comment on risky behaviour causing accidents it's worth doing some reading on the subject that involves actual studies. :)

Just to clarify, I wasn't suggesting that lorry drivers are 'bad', but that some might feel they're being implicitly blamed and be a little bit defensive. Others might be delighted with this announcement, means no traffic for them..

So... why the fuck are you interested in a notice telling cyclists about an increase in lorries on certain routes?

Any reason I shouldn't comment about something just because it doesn't particularly affect me directly?

As an occasional driver, and frequent bus traveller who cringes at all the near misses caused by cyclists, I feel qualified to comment.

The OP is giving a warning to cyclists, one which could save lives, as most cyclist deaths are caused by lorries. What part of that do you object to?

I guess you quite enjoy it when you hear about the latest cyclist being crushed to death.

What a revolting little creep you are.

People make a lot of assumptions on u75; don't they? Some cyclists are selfish and dangerous just as some lorry drivers are.

My other half cycles to & from work every day. I do worry about her but I don't think all lorry drivers are out to get her...
