It’s worth remembering as the tributes pour in what it is in Lawson’s career that we’ll be asked to admire: the introduction of monetarism, the control of inflation rather than economic growth as the key economic measure, privatisation of nationally owned public services, the financialisation of society with money worship saturating itself into every facet of life, the destruction of manufacturing and economic production and a historic collapse of the balance of payments.
Lawson - who will be remembered as a great supporter of entrepreneurship but was just a journalist- dying should be a moment to reflect on just how badly Britain fucked up. Dumping a national economy for the half baked theories of Hayek and Friedman was a disaster from which we still suffer.
