Latest Win 11 Update - a biggie!

Happy Tree

maagilises metsas
I just updated Win 11 and it acted like it was installing from scratch again. Must be a significant change. After it finished it had reset some modifications I'd made so I had to do them again. But, more weirdly, Windows was now claiming not to be activated. I tried troubleshooting but it said it couldn't find any activation key. I had to dig out the original disk with the 25-digit code on it and type it in myself. Now it's back. Just FYI, like.

I found out yesterday that my laptop (was second hand / refurbished a year or three ago) has a version of windows 11 (22H2) that's now end of life. and the damn thing doesn't meet the spec for the upgrade to the new version.

I got a W11 laptop when previous laptop gave up, as i thought it would have longer shelf life than a W10 one. I was already thinking that my PC will need replacing some time in 2025 (it's on W10 but was an update from W7 and also doesn't meet the spec for W11.)

hmph

(yes, i realise it's not going to just stop working, and being a bit less secure isn't really a big deal, as it's mainly a backup device / something to take with me if i'm going away, which doesn't happen as often as it used to, and i don't do anything highly secure like online banking on it.)

but hmph and thrice hmph.

This doesn't sound correct at all. Did it give you a reason or just the unhelpful this machine doesn't meat the requirements message?

What's the model of the laptop? If I had to take a guess I'd suspect for some reason it's not picking up the TPM chip. Or somebody upgraded a laptop that wasn't compatible with one of the many tools and now the upgrade is picking up on this.

This would be my guess. I'd use a similar method to install the latest version.

it's a dell latitude E6220 - i'd have to turn it on again to see what the spec is.

i can't remember exactly what the message was - i ran the windows health check thing and it listed a couple of things, but i can't remember the detail now. i'll fire it up again later or tomorrow (although i'm a bit reluctant to try and do too much with it now in case it causes problems just before i go away for xmas...)

Ok that's quite old. So it sounds like the last person bypassed the Win 11 requirements. I'm sure you can do the same if you want to. I've installed it on hardware that's not supported, but not done an update.
