Larry McMurtry: Lonesome Dove and Terms of Endearment author dies aged 84 - BBC News

Born in Texas, he won an Oscar for the screenplay he co-wrote for 2005 western Brokeback Mountain.

Wrote my favourite novel, Lonesome Dove , and lots of other stuff, Terms of Endearment, Hud . He also ran a book shop. 85 , so a decent innings.

how well known was he over there? he was huge here, i mean huge. this is front-page stuff. i haven't much use for fiction tbh and even i liked him.

His work is pretty well known, but I don't think most will know the author.

Never read any of his books, but seen his screenplays/films based on his work. Lonesome Dove is excellent

I'm over there & have read a lot of his stuff , Lonesome Dove was a big TV hit over here , the various sequels weren't (but I sought them out ) People will know some of his movies , Terms of Endearment , The Last Picture Show, are well known movies.

the last picture show (the movie) was kind of a cultural marker here for the generation older than i was at the time.

It is a great movie , the book is great too, and there are 2 book sequels too. (I've read them as well )
