Kyle Edmund - new tennis chap

He's got to the semi-finals of the Aussie Open !

Is he the new Murray or new Henman ?#comeontim
Watch the Murray-nationalists use him as tool to beat the english with if he loses the semi/wins the tournament - as he is SA born. That dimitrov can't seem to put two good matches together in a row. Just seen nadal has withdrawn so he plays Cilic...

His story manages to touch a lot of bases. He's practically Welsh (if he wins) or a ruddy South African if he loses.

Edmund was born in South Africa but moved to Britain when he was three and grew up in the village of Tickton[10] near Beverley, East Yorkshire.

Initially cricket and swimming were his main childhood pursuits, but he switched to tennis at 10 after lessons at the David Lloyd Racquet and Fitness Club in Hull with coach Richard Plews. He was educated at Pocklington School and Beverley Grammar School and by the age of 13 moved to Cannons in Hull to train with John Black. At 14, he moved with John Black to train at Win Tennis, based at the National Sports Centre in Bisham Abbey. When he was nearly 17, he based himself at the Lawn Tennis Association’s National Training Centre in Roehampton to be coached by Colin Beecher, returning to see his family at weekends.[11]

His father Steven was born in Wales and moved to Zimbabwe as a child.[12] His mother Denise (née Vosloo) is from South Africa. Steven is a director of a renewable energy company. His parents invested tens of thousands into their son’s tennis until the LTA provided funding through Aegon that took care of travel and coaching. [13][14] At home, Edmund trains at the Beverley and East Riding Lawn Tennis Club.[15]

Kyle Edmund is always, always referred to as "Kedders".[16] Edmund is also a football fan and supports Liverpool.

I really want to see the Edmund v Cilic game but it's probably on about 4 a.m. and despite being a night owl even I'm not up at that time!

Sounds like a Yorkshireman to me

Hell of a chance he's got now though, with Cilic instead of Nadal.

Interesting tournament for upsets so far.

8.30am on 5Live or so they are advertising.

Should be interesting if I get up in time. Had a couple of 5.30am rises the last couple of days so will either hear the lot or sleep through it. Listened to the quarters & he does have a strong forhand down the line. Come on Kyle! :D

Well I am up now but might doze off before it starts.

He has a good chance if he can keep his pecker up.

Come onTim !

Cilic has made me look foolish before but end of the road for Edmund I think. Cilic 3-0. Maybe he'll squeeze a tiebreak but his stats from their match near the end of last year suggest an uneven matchup, and Cilic's experience will be a factor.

Dunno whether he''s improved enough since then. Kyrgios should be in his place.

Elsewhere, oh dear.

Donald Trump supporter Tennys Sandgren has deleted 18 months worth of tweets after his political views were put under the microscope following his unlikely charge to the Australian Open quarterfinals.

After downing No 5 seed Dominic Thiem on Monday to move into the last eight at Melbourne Park, the 26-year-old Sandgren was grilled on his seeming support for the alt-right movement in the United States.

Fake news? Tennys Sandgren deletes tweets after denying alt-right views

Yeah, that's where the smart money would be.

Of course, the smart money has been lost a few times this tournament... ;)

So basically Kyle Edmund came joint third, so that's like an Olympic bronze medal. Coming third behind the legend that is #Fed20 isn't too shabby and he should be pleased with that and hopefully use that experience to propel himself up the rankings in 2018.

Federer is just incredible, love watching him play, it's like a graceful tennis ballet. The mens final was ok however as a spectacle, the womens final was much better this year imo (also the semi final between Halep and Kerber) and I'm usually not so keen on womens matches. I was exhausted watching them almost fight each other to a standstill, and the last two points that Woz won to take the title were breathtaking. Shame there had to be a loser.
