Jia Zhang-Ke

Become a bit of a fanboy of his recently. Just finished watching 'Touch of Sin' and it seemed like his best film yet for me. Although 'Unknown Pleasures' and 'Platform' are pretty close to that imo.

Anyone recommend any films that are similar to his? More thinking of other Chinese films rather than similar directors in other countries.

I love him. I have not seen A Touch of Sin yet. But I have seen almost all of his other films. 24 City is probably my favourite.

Zia Zhang-Ke is defined as a 'sixth generation'. I have not seen many films by his contemporaries, but comparable films (that I have seen) are maybe Beijing Bastards by Zhang Yuan - this is one of the first of the more independent sixth generation films, a film about punks in 1993 in Beijing shot with a handheld camera in a kind of cinema verite style. I really enjoyed this one.

Another that I have seen is Summer Palace by Lou Ye. My memory of this one is a bit hazy, but I remember it being pretty good.

Zia Zhangke is the best of them all, though.
