No! I’m really sad both because he seemed lovely and also because of my huge crush. I was fairly convinced that if he ever met me he would fall for me instantly.
Mrs Idris met him once, and came away impressed, even though she normally takes a dim view of all things SWP. He'd moved away from the swappies years ago, though, hadn't he?
The only line of his I remember: "I don't recall the 1960s being particularly permissive. I was allowed stay up late on Tuesdays to watch Bonanza, but that was it".
He used to be a keen member of Socialist Alliance, but he then went on to support Jeremy Corbyn, and took part in the JC4PM shows, and also in Labour Party fundraising shows. I got the impression he was a member of the Labour Party.
He really was. He was once at Offline on NYE when I was DJing (think he lived locally), and I drunkenly went and fan-girled at him at about 2am He was totally charming, particularly given I probably wasn't making 100% sense
Actually quite gutted by this. Fan of his since getting into radio 4 comedy in the 80s as a teenager. Turns out he was a carer at the primary school my daughter goes to. My wife saw him once, I never saw him, probaly for the best otherwise I'd probably been quite gushy in a middle aged fan boy way.
The joke of his I remember the most is 'my 11 year old asked for a pair of trainers, so I said why can't you make them yourself like 11 years in (can't remember specific country where one of the big sportsware companys used child labour)'
