iOS/iPadOS 14

Anyone took the plunge yet?

Since they only gave the Devs 1 day notice for the gold code, more than ever I won't be jumping in any time soon, however there does look to be quite a few funky new things.

iOS 14 is compatible with all of the same iPhones as iOS 13, including older devices like the original iPhone SE and iPhone 6s (released in 2015!)

And yes, Android users, we know, you had that 2 years ago, now kindly fuck off out the thread. ;)

It needs a spare 3.07GB on my old 16GB iPhone SE which I can't seem to manage so I will have to enjoy it on my iPad only until I get an iPhone 12.

Well, Android has had widgets for more like 15 years but I get your point. They are actually a bit pants anyway mainly because of the way developers implement them and the amount of screen estate they take up means most of them are useless. I'll wait and see how apple do it before moaning though.

Apart from that, lots of other nice new features. I wish Android would follow with the privacy stuff but Google can't really afford to seeing as they need our data to make money. I particularly like the sound of the app clips thing but I'm not entirely sure how it will work.

It's available as an update for me now but Apple have broken quite a few things with their .0 code in the past so I think I'll let the dust settle before I install it.

Did my (5 years old - this is why Apple are great) 6s yesterday. It works perfectly. I'm not really bothered by all the widgets nonsense, but the new security and privacy stuff is nice to know it's there.

Yup got it on my iPhone 8. iPad Air won’t run it, so I’m debating whether to buy a new one as I’ve been fancying a new one anyway, and seeing as new lockdown is basically inevitable I might treat myself with the money I’m saving (plus I paid off my credit card)

Updated my iPhone 7 and basic iPad...To be honest, I'm usually underwhelmed by IOS upgrades and I'm not sure what's so significant about this one so far. Certainly wouldn't buy a new iPad to be able to get it.

I wonder how much it slows down an iPhone 6S? Past experience suggests its not wise to update an older iPhone or iPad to the latest iOS years later, as it can turn a good device into slowsville.

TBH my iPad won’t even run the previous iOS

Totally disagree.

I think Apple have done an amazing job of improving the performance of iOS on older devices. It's in their interest really, the faster they make iOS the faster their flagship phones go too and the better the reviews.

Yeah it's no bother speed wise on a 6S. Nothing to get excited about either though.
I got an SE in the Spring but still use my old 6S for listening to music, audiobooks and whatnot. Don't care about widgets. The back tap thing might be useful if the SE supports it. Not upgraded the SE to iOS 14 yet, cos if aint broke etc

They added back double-tap and back triple-tap which you can assign to certain actions. I've got double back tap to bring up the app switcher.

I installed 14.2 onto my 7th gen iPad last night.

Anything new I should be looking out for? Other than the 100+ new emoji and some wallpapers. The rest of it seems to be aimed at iPhones.

It’s been a decent update so far, much better than ios13. Have to say it’s been fascinating seeing the widget thing take off even though I don’t bother with them much (never really been a big fan of them so the fandroids banging on about them have never really been interfering).

I've been enjoying the photo widget.
There is a CityMapper widget, a list of all the nearby departures but it doesn't go onto the home screen.
Widgets are confusing to use I expect an overhaul at some point.
