Howard Marks - Mr Nice

Yes, it's worth a read.

It's a good story, has a few laughs in it and I got through it in a couple of days. If you view everything he writes as at least partly fiction and try to ignore his 'I'm just an ordinary bloke really' schtick it's entertaining enough.

I liked Mr Nice, reckon it's worth a read. Book of Dope Stories is absolute shite though.

Mr Nice is a good read. I liked it a lot. So long ago since I read it, it might deserve another read actually.

Dope Stories isn't the best no. There are a few good passages in it, but iirc he didn't write any of it, it's a compilation of drug influenced stories that he liked. Could be wrong though. I never finished reading that book.

'The Drug User' that was edited by William Burroughs is a better anthology of drug literature than 'Dope Stories', imo.

I read it though a few years back and found it interesting. Great hand fulls of salt here and there but c'est un dealer.

I liked the part about going for an eye prescription while stoned and getting some "instant stoned effect" glasses for later.

he seems like a clever bloke from the book, it's a shame that he just basically filled it with shit about dope dealing etc cos some of his observations are pretty good

I think it's a pretty good rollicking adventure story tbh. I don't care if not one word of it is true.

His storytelling means he's a bit like the Andy McNab of the 70s drug culture.

And it's weird how his presentation and demeanour has occasional hints of the classic showy bullshitters like Robert Maxwell and Jeffery Archer.

i found "mr nice" a great read:cool: when i read it ages ago..esp the early sections which desribe his uni and bohemian life in the late 60s.if you have an interest in that time/place you will enjoy his insight and observations.i found the book lost me a bit in the middle sections when he desribes all his dope dealings all over the world ..it is all very very complex:confused: almost impossible to follow.you wonder how he kept all his dealings straight..
the book picks up a lot when he gets sent to prison in america.:( again very funny and good insights about the DEA/prison system.amazingly intelligent/adaptable man to come thru something like that relatively unscarred.

i read "senor nice" recently..found it pretty interesting..a lot about welsh history and his family tree in it.so quite different to mr nice really.he comes off as a bit sexist in it but i suppose most men that age are,but it wasnt massively offensive to me and im a feminist.

For sheer drug bonkers style; I recommend "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas" by Hunter S. Thompson.

I'm reading that at the moment. It's a book I should have read years ago but never got round to for some reason.

It's ok, but I probably would have enjoyed it much more in my late teens/early twenties.

High Times (The Life & Times of HM) The first book written about him in the early eighties is better for this. Well in my opinion.;)

I think you'll find that there's a good reason why his prose sounds like that of other writers

he struck me as a bit of a twat, but my sister met him (he lives in leeds) and tells me he's a lovely chap.
