How to find out if a film has been released

Minnie_the_Minx

Trying to find a film called "Without Memory" by a Japanese director (Koreeda).

Have looked on YesAsia, Amazon and IMDB and can't find it. Is there somewhere I can look that lists films and release dates?

Imdb

Admittedly there's not a lot of info on there about it, but it's there (-including it's Japanese title, which might help you find out more elsewhere).

1996, apparently.

According to the link, 'released 28th December 1996' (-presumably that's the Japanese release date).

Its never been released theatrically in the UK. Doesn't mean that its not been out on video however.

Do you mean the documentry Kioku ga ushinawareta toki?
It came out in 1996.

I have only seen 'dare mo shiranai' which is very very sad.

Had a quick look on some Japanese sites and could not even find a release there.
It's a shame as most of his stuff is has english subs which is quite rare for Japanese disks.

Yeah, think that's the Japanese title. It's about a man that has no short-term memory due to hospital negligence.

Was also the Director of Nobody Knows

Ah, that would be 'dare mo shiranai' as 'nobody knows' would be the literal translation.

That's the only one of his films I have seen, it stars pop sing 'YOU' playing her role quite well I think, but the kids really put on a cracking performace. Very sad film.

All his other films are available on DVD in Japan with english subs, there is also a box of his 92 TV docs without subs. Can't find a mention of without memory anywhere, not even a bootleg.

How did you hear about it?

Yeah, saw Nobody Knows a couple of weeks ago. Would be interested to see which parts of the story are true and how the kids were discovered etc.

Have looked on the sites provided here and can't find no mention of Without Memory.

Afterlife looks quite interesting (although I've read it can be a bit slow at times, but then I suppose if you're dead, life doesn't really whizz by :D )

I have just come back from japan again and meant to top myself up on loads of J-films but forgot to check out hot titles so only bought about five.

What is afterlife about?

The word back from Mrs Suplex is that it has only ever been on TV in Japan in 96 and the only screening was at sundance.

If Koreedas other doc box set (out now) does well I'm sure it will come out soon.

Sounds interesting but could be a little slow.

Have you seen these two.

'be with you' I think is the english title

Crying out love in the centre of the world.

Both were huge in Japan, I haven't seen either as they sound a bit wet, but I am told they are great so will get round to it at some point espesualy as Mrs Suplex wants to see them.

Seems a popular theame in J cinema and drama at the moment. I think it has all been kick started by the popularity of sentimental Korean dramas on J tv.

Don't know any of them and won't be getting them - not yet anyway. Already have too many DVDs in my Amazon shopping basket waiting to be bought

Will bear that in mind. I've ordered a few off them but I don't know whether it's them or the distributor or what, but I've always found them to come with no information - just the DVD itself, but then again, maybe that's how the DVD originally came out IFKWIM  :D

What, no box? What information do you mean?
