Up until the point where someone hits the big time, either they are forking out £££ for coaching, or their coach who has stuck with them since they were a minor club athlete & is making a loss on the number of hours they are dedicating finally gets the payday they deserve.

Yeah, that's another thing to remember, of course. Thousands of coaches in a wide variety of disciplines routinely work for nothing. They are volunteers, often making a net loss for their troubles. They do it for the love of it.

Same is true of administrators. Sports leagues and associations across the country are administered by volunteers.
 
But only in very specific sports. There's a reason we traditionally do well in a select few sports - I don't remember exactly which article I read about it, but this seems to cover the same ground:
