I wasn't a big fan of him comparing players to property either (though I do like the idea of your house "toddling off" after 24 years ), but I can see how it would be annoying from his point of view. That said, it can be just as annoying from the player's point of view; like most things it's open to exploitation from both sides and quite frankly I'd generally prefer there to be a bit more power with the employee than the employer.
but the idea of ownership comes from paying for players in the first place. If your high school demanded a transfer fee from your first employer, then they'd logically be able to complain if you left them without recompense.
