Hamlet v Cray 26/8/24

Couldn't get there today. The win was great but was the performance better than recently?

Wasn't a great game but a good win. Wanadio and Jeffrey as usual provided all the threat, with Wanadio creating both goals.

Collins didn't make much of an impact on his first start. It's early days and he's young though so hopefully he'll come good given time.

1st half was pretty awful Tbf. 2nd half a big improvement. We deserved the win on the 2nd half, but not much between the teams for most of the game They had 3/4 around the ref all game constantly in his ear and it worked. He was dreadful any gave us very little. They v clearly were trying to get Porter sent off all game and he struggled to not take the bait. Mills made a big difference for the last 30mins and against tiring teams he’s so effective. Collins had a big baptism of fire into men’s football and was well marshalled by the cray cb’s. Thought Lorenzo looked lively in his cameo and after a shaky start. Midfield had a bit more balance with SBJ.

It wasn’t pretty but we had some flashes second half of what the team can do going forward, especially when there was more space.

The winner turned an industrious performance against a cynical team into a good one - particularly as the inept referee was mostly suckered into their nonsense.

Collins showed little on his first start, but was given equally little to work with. We looked better when Mills came on and started to turn the screw.

Porter seemed to play a bit further forward, and fell into his role as chief annoyance with a little too much ease - took his goal well, and suffered a bloody, possibly broken, nose for his efforts.

The defence was mostly solid, with too much pressure invited from free kicks given away near the box, ably assisted by the referee falling for their antics. Chambers had a particularly strong game, but Taiwo-Pratt can be satisfied with how he handled a dangerous front man in David Smith.

Bennett-Johnson was excellent throughout, consistently in the right place at the right time, and giving Hand a bit more space to get on the ball and try and dictate things.

Jeffrey and Wanadio were our main threats as ever, both played well. A nice touch for Jeffrey to get the important goal this time.

And a mention for Lorenzo (I think that’s what we’re calling him?), who again put in a cameo that suggested he could offer a lot more.

A final word for Cray - what a horrible team to watch, particularly as they have ample talent at their disposal. Cook and Clunis were mostly bystanders whilst they went long to Smith, or tried to bait the referee into soft free kicks. More than a little satisfying to get the win against a team like that.

Good performance especially with 3 teenagers in the spine of the team. Dami & Ralfie both excellent with Collins never going missing despite a difficult game.
Sean in midfield was the standout player on the pitch, simple and effective.
Not much to say about the referee except some baffling decisions & the only thing consistent about him was his total inconsistency

A great result from a moderately encouraging performance, against a particularly dislikeable Cray Wanderers side. (I felt we probably played better on the whole against Whitehawk, if you disregard the momentary lapses for which we were fully punished in that game.) However, there were some mitigating circumstances and we grew stronger as the game progressed. We had 3 inexperienced teenagers in the XI, with several key players out injured. Taiwo-Pratt coped well physically with proven centre forward Dave Smith, who has a lot of goals in this division, and who engaged him in a wrestling match every time they came together. Hand again showed his quality on the ball. Collins had a thankless task leading the line against a physically imposing pair of centre backs with a combined age of 70 and about 1,000 senior appearances between them, mostly at higher levels. His most important contribution was possibly just spending an hour at the coalface, giving Mills the opportunity to come on fresh with 30 minutes to go and pose a new threat. In fact, when you see the names of Tom Bonner and David Ijaha on the teamsheet you know it's not just the centre forward who's going have a difficult time, because they both do their best to referee the game too.

Our back four looked rather vulnerable in the first half, despite taking the lead with a great headed finish at the near post by Porter from a Wanadio cross. We were perhaps a bit fortunate to be level at the break on balance of play, although it took almost until half time for Cray to equalise. Wanadio conceded a cheap free kick right out by the touchline, pulling back Anthony Cook, and Frankie Raymond made us pay with a great dead ball delivery to the edge of the six yard box that was headed in by Bonner.

I'm not sure whether we were more assertive, or Cray purposely became more cautious, but we became more dominant after half time while Cray rarely threatened our goal again The first time we got a set piece with Mills on the field, Ijaha instantly sought him out and wrapped him up in a bear hug before the rest of the players even had the chance to set themselves. The referee, who was very keen to flash his yellow card right from the start and to give free kicks for the slightest coming together, was weak throughout on all the assorted off the ball nonsense and "outside toiletry". Ijaha had limped off injured to be replaced by Quade Taylor some while before we took the lead. Mills seemed to be fouled by Taylor inside the box, but the ball ran loose to Wanadio on the right, who turned his man inside out and drew the keeper towards the near post, before pulling the ball back low into the centre for Jeffrey to smash into the net from 8 yards out. We should have had the chance to wrap the game up from the penalty spot in stoppage time when Bonner flopped onto the ball, trapping it underneath his body, then clearly knocked it away from our player with his hand as he was getting up. He then chased after Lewis and manhandled him off the ball, somehow winning a free kick for himself from a referee who had been in his back pocket all afternoon.

There was a huge roar for the winning goal, the loudest I can recall for some time. We Then had one of my pet hates. An absurdly prolonged celebration in the corner, which meant it took so long for play to restart that the Cray manager was able to prepare a substitute and get him onto the pitch before they kicked off. Exactly the same happened against Hornchurch last season when we took a late 2-1 lead, then ended up losing after a vital cameo from one of their late substitutes. However, this time we saw out the remaining 8 minutes plus at least 6 more of stoppage time without any real difficulty, and it felt like a momentous victory at the end.

Standout performer for me was the artist formerly known as Triallist SBJ. No unnecessary risks, no unforced errors, always in the right place to win or receive the ball, and quick to pick the right pass. A model of efficiency. I've always valued him, and he embodies all the qualities that had been most conspicuous by their absence so far this season.

Really enjoyed the 2nd half after a bland 1st half which was at 1 v 1 was a fair reflection. Hak on the pitch before the 2nd half started appeared to have the desired effect and from then on we were really up for creating chances. I thought all the defence and SBJ were excellent after the break and a big performance from Taiwo -Pratt . What i liked about it was the way they attacked very challenge with real force and didnt give Cray an inch. Well done all.
