Hamburg - chat, photos and recommendations

some things to be aware of in HH

do not cross the main roads unless you are at a proper crossing place. Some of the police are really anal about this. learn what the amber light that is on its own on the corner of roads is for. it means you can cross and the cars should stop to let you. they cant really do pizza for shit.. if its still going have the meat feast from happy croque (its like a toasted baggettute thing) its wil harden your arteries in 40 seconds flat but is lush.

avoid javer
drink wheat beer
have a curry wurst and pretzl

visit the big department stores, even if you dont buy anything they are worth wandering about for a bit

there is a a restraunt just off alter wall that you cook your own meat at the table on a hot stone at. its really nice cant remember its name sadly
I've resisted it so far but I'm now sat bored in Russia so I have to pick you up on a couple of points

There are some great pizza places in Hamburg!

Javer (?) Jever is ok and its at least a Northern German beer unlike wheat beer, which although being great is Bavarian (Spits on the floor in disgust) there are some decent Northern lagers (Holsten isn't one of them mind) such as Bittburger, Herforder, Flensburger and a few more.

It should be Currywurst und Pommes! Pretzl is also a BAVARIAN!!!! thing (spits again!)

pizza hut doesnt count... :)

i also have to disagree on the pretzl thing. currywurst and one of those huge pretzls is lovely.

I mean real pizza places run by Italians! Also the kebabs in Germany are lightyears ahead of the warmed up dogfood on offer in the UK.

Pretzl! Pffft only when in Bavaria (tbh I was in Munich airport a couple of weeks back and I went staight for the Weisswurst, Pretzl and Hefeweizen) ;)

ime all german pizzas do not have enought cheese on them. they also fail to tell you that when, as an obvious brit, you ask for grosse peperoni that your mouth will hate you for the next few hours...

fully agree on the kebabs btw.

i like pretzls

Ah I've had different experiences there with pizzas, I like Pretzls too, it's just there's a time and place for everything! ;)

i love rote grutze - but outside of hamburg its never been as good. to the O/P .. try this too its fucking ace
Totally agree with the bit about how good it is, with the comment that in certain small places around Celle and Lueneburg the Rotegruetze are just as good as in Hamburg!

hmmm those two last pictures look far too simialr for my liking when blurry. advice to OP .. dont order either when drunk

Go to rote flora for a gig, wander about near there. Go wander round the docks. Already been mentioned but go see the fishmarket, have fish butty and cold beer while there. Take the U-bahn thing and go look at graffiti, or walk round near St-Pauli - there's tons of good graffiti in hamburg. Go to sternschanze which is nr rote flora for a drink, bit poncy but I liked it anyway.I really like hamburg, hope you're having fun.

Mutter on Stresemannstr is a good late pub, and the one beside it if it's still there.
Rosi's on Hamburger Berg.
The Jolly Roger on Budapester Straße - St.Pauli fan pub.
Frau Hedi - a club/cinema/gigvenue on a little boat that goes round the harbour. Dunno if it's running atm.

Hamburg was wicked! Spent most of our time eating sausages and drinking in various St Pauli pubs inc the eck and the jolly roger. St Pauli won the match 4-1 which made for a excellent atmosphere last night. Also there was a double rainbow over the stadium, really pretty. Didn't get to ride the ferris wheel or go on a boat but that means we've a reason to go back :)

I'm off to Hamburg on Sunday for a work thing. I'll probably not get much chance for any R&R except for on Sunday evening. I'm based near the Reeperbahn so was considering having a wander round Sunday night. Is it safe for someone on their own to wander round at night? I've wandered round cities on my own before but red light districts can be a little scary sometimes.

What do we reckon Urbz?

Reeperbahn is pretty safe, my daughter goes out there with her friends for evenings out, some really nice pubs, clubs, theatres etc, don't let the fact that it's a red light district put you off, you can have a great evening there.
It's a shame you can't do the Saturday night Reeperbahn to Sunday morning Fischmarkt (excellent night out usually but shouldn't be started too early)

We're off to Hamburg again in October. Five days this time so hopefully a bit more time to explore and check out suggestions on the thread

Feel free to make new ones too :)

I will ask my friends when I see them on Thursday. There is excellent football in Hamburg even if you don't like that sort of thing x
