Grayson Perry's Dream House

Epona

Sonic: 1 Nov 2006 - 8 Jan 2022
Did anyone else watch?

Honestly I wasn't sure what to make of it before seeing the show, and for a bit it sounded like it was poking fun in some way... but by the end I was won over, architecturally the building is the love-child of a Byzantine church and Angkor Wat, complete with iconography, statuary, and tapestries. By the end of the programme I couldn't help but love it.

Anyone else see it and want to share their opinion?

I only saw the last 10 minutes but looked good. I think Perry might be the most interesting artist alive, just gets better and better.

I agree. He's a curiously wise man.

I missed my chance and watched the dreary 'Mr Norrell...' instead...:(

Listening to him I think he might be a bit hatstand, but in the nicest and very positive connotation - and with a heavy smattering of genius.

He is, but he's also incisive and incredibly socially aware. I like how his art is often aimed at a particular person or social group and they appear to be shocked at how accurately he sees into them, with real sensitivity, and they're touched to the core.

I think the moment that swung it towards me thinking 'this is actually brilliant' was seeing the statue of 'Julie' that was going to be put on the roof, it was redolent of both prehistoric mother figurines, and also of medieval byzantine style madonna icons with the hairstyle mimicking the halo, and yet was also very modern - at that point I realised that it was incredibly clever.

That reminds me, I must catch up on this. I have little time for his work, but appreciate that he is hugely supportive of the arts, is on the board of governers at London College of Art and spends a lot of time there helping students Etc. He was very eloquent at the Reith Lectures a while back. The biggest downer is the biog about him by Wendy Jones. Never mind, he is a force for good.

Never been hugely keen on Grayson's work, although I cant deny his talent, but that house is sweet.

Yes I watched it on the Channel 4 catch up on Monday, thought it was brilliant.

I like his work and he seems a lovely guy.
I saw an exhibition of his embroideries last year and I went to the exhibition he curated at the British Museum a couple of years ago, interesting choice of exhibits from their collection plus some of his work.

I thought it was a great project...... I wasn't really a fan of him when he did the turner prize stuff (admittedly the first time I'd heard of him), but as I've seen his projects on tele more and more, his ideas etc make a lot more sense. The building itself was beautiful I though.

You can enter a ballot to stay in it..... it aint cheap though.

I have entered the ballot. Will worry about the cost if I win, but it does look like an amazing place.

Grayson Perry is definitely up there with the greats.
