Good places to eat in Rome

ash

Inittogether
We're going to Rome soon with an 8 year old. I would really appreciate any recommendations of decent places to eat. Cheap to middling, we are staying near the Spanish steps but anywhere that's a decent or walk away is also fine. I'm hoping to avoid getting crap food and fleeced in the tourist traps.

I'm off with a 12 year old just after easter. We're staying in Trastevere. I've spent a fair bit of time looking at places to eat on TripAdvisor and The Guardian has a bit of a city guide too.

I have a Sardinian friend who lived in Rome for 4 years.

She sent me this.

BEST AREAS.
- Rione Monti (day - evening)
- Trastevere (always!)
- San Lorenzo (day - night)
- Pigneto (day - night) (Pasolini's neighbourhood!)
- Ostiense (day)
- Garbatella (day)
- EUR (day)
(these last 3 areas are all in the south of the city very close each other, the majority of people tend not to visit them cause they are working class areas, but if you can go cause they are typical and very very roman!)
PARKS.

- villa pamphilj +++++
- villa ada ++++
- villa borghese +++
FOOD.
Pizza forum (Colosseo area) - real neapolitan pizza. (SUPER!!!)
Ciak si Mangia (Pigneto) - real roman pizza.
--
Da Bruno Ai Quattro Venti (Trastevere) - ristorante/trattoria (more expensive!)
La Suburra (Rione Monti) - ristorante/osteria - cucina romana (more expensive!)
Birreria Peroni (Altare della Patria) - pizzeria/osteria/birreria (more expensive!)
--
Lo zozzone (Piazza Navona, via del teatro della pace) - it's an amazing focacceria, this is a MUST, try at least 4 different focaccia :) (fast and cheap - daytime!)
Papero giallo (Piazza Sempione) - tavola calda (ealthy fast food), this is not a must but the area is pretty nice, it's in the suburbs (fast and cheap - daytime!)
Mondo arancina (piazza del popolo - rione monti) - (sicilian fast food) - (fast and cheap - daytime!)
--
Gelateria lo Yeti (Pigneto) - super nice ice creams!
Pompi (Re di Roma) - pasticceria/bar - go there!!! this is a MUST, they make the best tiramisù in rome!!
BAR.
Necci bar (Pigneto) - this is a Pasolini's Accattone place, must go!!! - cheap bar but not so cheap food + nice music!
Fanfulla 101 (Pigneto) - nice music as well
Cargo (Pigneto)
Bar san calisto (Trastevere) - the most popular cheap bar in trastevere
Freni e frizioni (Trastevere) - very good but expensive
Caffè letterario (Ostiense) - very very good but expensive
Micca club (S.Maria Maggiore) - for happy hours and late dance, but its expensive!
San Lorenzo area is full of small and nice bars!

I absolutely recommend, above all others, Trattoria Luzzi on Via di San Giovanni in Laterano. 5 minutes walk from Colosseo Underground. Fantastic food, owned by a fantastic bloke and the food is outstanding. It's closed on Wednesdays.

Trattoria Quanto sei bella Roma on Via Selinute in Quadraro is worth a look. Need a taxi but again it's reasonably cheap and does fantastic Roman food.

La Zingarella on Via Gino Capponi in San Giovanni is worth a visit. It's a 5 minute walk from Furio Camillo underground station.

Pane, Vino e San Daniele in the Jewish ghetto is a 'chain' but does fantastic food.

TrentaDue on Via Volsci is a Leftist squat that does a lunch and dinner menu.
Ridiculously cheap, really good food and in a famous working-class district of Rome. It's a 10 minute walk from Termini station.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I have just been on trip advisor but prefer more personal recommendations. I will be checking out all your suggestions. We are hoping to walk as much as possible and avoid taxis so Trattoria Luzzi and Pizza Forum sound handy - Cheers :)

Taxi drivers will try and rip you off in Rome even more than in other big cities. Try and avoid cabs if you can.
