General advice on NYC

I'm planning a trip to new york later this year, with my elderly mother and my sister. I'm just looking for some advive on where to stay, we'll be there about 8-9 days so looking to hire an apartment. If anyone knows any good websites let me know. Also want to know things to do, the sis and Mum want to go shopping...not my bag unless it's record shops so if anyone can recommend some of them that'd be great. And we'll have one night clubbing (without the old dear) so any recomendantions that'd be great.

What kind of clubs? There's still a good scene on the Lower East Side, although a lot of the action has moved out of Manhattan.

Reggae really is my main thing, but thought about checking out some Dubstep as it's the UK's main export at the moment. Free parties would be better but gather there isn't much of a scene out there
