Full Metal Jacket ..

I think it's like two films: one very good, and the other, not as good.

The first film is the first part of the movie, the training part. That movie is a masterpiece.

The second film is the fighting bit in Hue, which I thought was just an average movie.

So, are you saying that all the scenes were filmed in UK?

There must have been lots of equipment brought in, helicopters tanks etc ..

There was that scene when joker and his buddy were being flown to the front and you saw the paddy fields the nutter was shooting up ... could that have been filmed in UK?

Nearly all of Full Metal Jacket was filmed in the UK. Pretty much all of Saving Private Ryan was filmed in the UK and Ireland, too.

Yup - much of it was filmed in the UK according to imdb

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093058/locations

"The entire film was shot in England (Pinewood studios and military barracks). Footage of an actual graduation ceremony at Parris Island was used in the film, with an insert from England added to it. For the final battle scenes set in Hueh, Kubrick was able to use the abandoned gasworks town of Beckton on the River Thames. Researchers painstakingly went through dozens of shots of the real Hueh in order to make sure Beckton looked authentic, and palm trees were brought into the area to create a tropical effect."

It does look like Beckton with added palm trees tbh.

I was reading in Empire about the 30th anniversay of Alien. Some of the marines, including Gorman (Lay down a supressing fire) and Ricco (flame-throwered to death at 01:11:07), came straight off FMJ onto Aliens, all beefed up from their commando training

I have just watched the first half of Full Metal Jacket again (it is on Tv now) ... the first half is almost like a movie on its own.

I am not sure I will bother to watch the second half, seen it a few times.

But the first half is great!

I think someone said on this thread earlier that it was filmed in UK, I can't really believe it, there were palm trees and everything. The first half could have been filmed here, but the second half?

Before i check the web, are those Wessex helicopters? Is that an inaccuracy borne out of necessity? Did the seps have them as well as Hueys?

They were known in the British forces as Wessex helicopters, yes, but they were originally designed and built by Sikorsky until the British firm Westland made a deal to make them for the UK. IIRC, the Wessex fleet have long since been replaced in the British forces for some years now.

I want to see Apocalypse Now again ...

I love the scene flying in helicopters through the smoke which swirls, to the sound of The Rolling Stones!

"I think you're the kind of guy who would fuck a person in the ass and not even have the goddamn common courtesy to give him a reach-around!"

Quite simply, the best film quote ever :D

Apparently Kubrick had to ask what a reach-around was... Bless.

hmm, I'd have to agree here, although the soundtrack to part two always seemed the better imho

"God has a hard-on for Marines because we kill everything we see!
He plays His games, we play ours! To show our appreciation for so much power,
we keep heaven packed with fresh souls! God was here before the Marine Corps!
So you can give your heart to Jesus, but your ass belongs to the Corps! Do you ladies understand?"

It's accurate.
USMC has a different procurement process to the US army. That's how come they still use Wessexes, Sea Kings, etc, and Harriers, while the US army tends to buy American.

One of the most quotable films I've ever seen.
I like it but I don't love it. I thought that I'd try to watch it again to decide exactly how much I like it, might do that tonight actually.
