I'd tell people to go to Edinburgh. It's a unique and beautiful city,it's the capital and for all the merits of other parts of Scotland it'd be silly to go and not visit it.

Don't gte me wrong - i love Edinburgh 
but I just saw on 'Reporting scotland' that Edinburgh is the most overbooked city in Europe and people are even letting out their private rooms

People have been letting their private rooms there for a very long time now and serious overbooking has been pretty normal for years - Festival time and other popular periods is a feeding frenzy for those wanting to rip-off visitors.
I've posted before of my various experiences of Edinburgh hotels taking your booking at one price, then not honouring it and trying to screw an extra 500%+ for the same room or trying to fob you off with an "alternative" of some vermin-infested hellhole or a guesthouse out in the sticks - Or the East Neuk of Fife in one instance!
