Yes, there is a way.

1) Go to the advanced settings in chrome:
type chrome://flags in address bar

2) Find flag side-search
or
type chrome://flags/#side-search in address bar

3) Select Disabled from the drop-down list to the right of that setting

4) Restart your browser

5) Enjoy "old" behaviour back

It went doolally again and I briefly even lost right-click google search altogether ...

The experimental flag name is now :-

chrome://flags/#search-web-in-side-panel

Apparently I will need to repeat this every time Chrome updates
