Feline diabetes - help?

Our much-loved cat Hoggy has just been diagnosed with diabetes - we have an appointment with the vet on Monday to discuss treatment. From a brief google I gather this is going to involve twice-daily injections of insulin. Does anyone have experience of this? And can tell me roughly how much it's going to cost? There's no chance I'll have him put down for financial reasons but it would be good to have an idea of how much it's going to cost.

ETA: Unfortunately he's not insured as he is also FIV+ (cat AIDS, bless him) and it's almost impossible to get insurance for AIDS cats.

I knew a cat with diabetes. Don't know how much the injections were, but harder for the owner was the fact the cat had to be fed 4 small meals a day at set times, rather than being able to eat when it liked. Meant they couldn't really get away, and had to get someone in whilst they were at work.

I don't have any personal experience of this, but this site has some very helpful information and a message board.

A mate of mine had a diabetic cat for a year or so. They can't remember the cost - but you have to be at home the same time every day to inject. If you go away, you need to find a neighbour who can and will inject the cat at the correct time.

I'm at home with a baby at the moment anyway, so being there to inject him isn't a problem. We have a very reliable neighbour who feeds him when we go away, I think she would be ok with injecting him. We're not planning any holidays over the next year really anyway.

The good news is that Hoggy has gone into remission :) No more twice-daily injections. Yay Hogs!
