Euro 2012: England line-up

I think you'd be surprised at football fandoms view point. On my teams site (Derby County), Harry Redknapps proposed appointment was either met with a passive acceptance or a strong minded rejection. Roy Hodgsons name was suggested and most people backed him. When he was finally appointed people were pleased. Only The Sun seemed to dislike the idea, and I think you'll find most people slating the paper these days, ex readers or non tabloid readers collectively.

Most people I meet also support moving on from the old guard and starting afresh. That includes the likes of Gerrard, Lampard and Terry. Not sure about Rio, I think he's still well liked.

For the sake of the thread.

---------------Hart

Micah-Lescott-Rio/Jagielka-Cole

----------Parker--Barry

Walcott----Rooney-----Young

--------------Carroll

Whilst Rooney serves his suspension I'd give Oxlade-Chamberlain a run out. People talk about his age but he's old enough. Failing that you could make it a bit more defensive and include a Lampard or Gerrard I suppose. Whichever way we play they're going to get a call up, think I'd leave Gerrard at home though he's had a poor season.

Playing Rooney deep behind the main striker would probably benefit him and the team more, he grows frustrated on his own up top which leads him into trouble. Get him involved in the game.

Anyway, we'll be lucky to get to the quater finals and if we do lets just hope it's the Rep of Ireland. What a game that could be.

For the first time ever in my life, I really don't give a monkeys about this tournament. I used to get so excited about the big tournaments but I am completely meh this time round.

Sadly, this is rather how I'm feeling. It'll probably change once we get started, but I'm actually more looking forward to games that don't involve England. This is possibly because, despite myself, I care how we play, whereas the other games I can just enjoy.

But I really don't care like I used to.

Right back will be an interesting selection. Richards will be favourite, but Walker's a sturdy back up, and Johnson isn't totally shite, albeit he not likely to improve much more at nearly 28.

I'll also be keen for Hodgson to persuade Ben Foster out of international retirement as backup and a bit of competition for Hart. At 29, he's still got maybe ten years left.

Hart
Walker - Richards - Jones - Rose
Rodwell
Chamberlain - Wilshere
Walcott
Sturridge - Welbeck
And believe me some of those selections don't half stick in my craw...

Would you really pick Wilshere, given he hasn't played at all this season? Good player, I know, but he's not even guaranteed to be fit for the new season.

Basically, I'd pick a team for 6 years time. Something I was hoping would happen after the WC fuck up. But no, we carry on playing Gerrard, Lampard, Terry, etc. I would have even fucked Rooney off after the WC and made him earn his place back. He was fucking shocking.

Scott Parker is doubtful, but Redknapp is playing down Kyle Walker's injury.

Parker is a real worry - we're already a bit thin in midfield and if he doesn't go it'll make it more likely that the 'Golden Generation' will linger on.
Depends who else we play in midfield. Parker has been great for us this season, but he is a DM, not an all-rounder or box-to-box player. The guy should be banned from ever shooting for one thing.

So if we have three creative/attacking players in there with him then he's a great addition to the team. But if he's played alongside the likes of Barry, or other players that don't offer much attacking threat, then the side would be too one-dimensional. He's played alongside Sandro very successfully a few times, but - despite Sandro being primarily a ball-winner, he's also pretty good going forward, and we've had Bale and Lennon bombing down the wings. England don't usually play with wingers.

But that's kind of my point, aside from Parker and Barry what other DMs do we have? And I'm not sure how comfortable I am relying on Barry anyway.

Yeah, Carrick was the only other one that occurred to me (well, and Dawson, but...).

Surprisingly Barton did not spring to mind... :D

Bags of pace there so should be more width to take advantage of it. None of those players are intelligent enough to play in that formation yet or have the passing ability of the Spanish to keep things compact. And Walcott behind the two strikers, the guy can't hit a barn from 6 yards out how's he going to supply the frontmen with pinpoint passes? You need a Sheringham for that role which we sadly lack.

predicted team for France then?

I'm guessing:

Hart - Johnson, Terry, Lescott, Cole - Downing, Parker, Gerrard, Milner - Young - Carroll.

And lo, it will be shit.

The good news is there'll be no disappointment this time. Because we're obviously gonna lose.
as much as I empathize with the sentiment, ultimately it is football. I'd hate to think that by spawning a draw against France we'll suddenly turn all optimistic.

We will probably scrape into the quarter finals, there to be squished like bugs by whichever of Spain or Italy we come up against.

Spain-England would be a dour game. Massively negative possession hogs with no striker, who often get stuck playing in front of teams that defend deep versus team who surrender possession even when not under pressure and have no positive features other than their defence.

Hart
Johnson Terry Lescott Cole
Gerrard Parker
Walcott ------ Young ------- Milner
Welbeck
If it were up to me it would be Young on the left, Milner in the disciplined centre midfield role and Gerrard playing his usual Hero-Complex bell-endery behind the front man. Again if it was up to me, if I was playing the form left footed centre back with a Premiership medal round his neck, I wouldn't be looking to partner him with a slow, injury-prone, racist cunt with the turning circle of an oil tanker and a career long penchant for also playing on the left of a centre back pairing.

I'd put Jagielka in instead of Terry and maybe someone instead of Walcott but there's not much scope in that squad.
