Ernest Borgnine RIP

Rip to the last of the Wild Bunch.

It was bugging me as to what I'd watched him in recently. Turns out it was the 1979 version of All Quiet on the Western Front, which was not as good as the original version but would have been much worse without his performance.

He was an odd one, didn't conform to any conventional Hollywood stereotype, wasn't the most amazing actor ever, yet somehow was eminently watchable - his performances might not have been the most captivating, but you can't imagine ever not finding him anything but genial. I suspect he'd have been a nice bloke to have a pint with.

Effortless charisma.

Great actor and seemed like a decent man, another one of that generation helped by the post-war GI bill. Also, couldn't help but hear that line from John Cooper Clarke's 36 Hours, which I suppose testifies to him being an icon.
