England 23 Man Squad

I don't recall Iain Dowie playing in a World Cup.

But that could just be my brain refusing to recognise the full horror.

Ok, so Dawson is good enough to be part of a clean sheet against Man City (with Bellamy, Tevez, Adebayor etc. for whom Brazil starter Elano couldn't get a game), be part of a winning defence against Chelsea and Arsenal, but will be posed unanswerable problems by the USA, Slovenia and Algeria?

Terry should be reinstated as captain. He was kicked out because of a media witch hunt and not because of anything that had anything to do with football. Drug-related skullduggery does have something to do with football, although that's obviously a moot point now. Gerrard hasn't got the form, Rooney hasn't got the brains and nobody else, barring perhaps Lampard, can be sure enough of their spot to warrant getting the armband.

Genuinely gutted about Rio though, you can be pretty sure nobody in the world wants to play against a back four with him and John Terry in it :(

Not sure if Capello would view it as an easy way to return the captaincy or as a perception of weakness.

I just can't stand the thought of Terry leading the team. The only responsibility a football captain has is holding the mascot's hand and tossing the coin, but the less I see of that pisshole-in-the-snow-eyed fucker the better.

Indeed.

And his shenanigans do relate to football. It'd be a bit weird to have somebody as the captain who has fucked over one of his team mates so comprehensively. (pun intended.)

I'm not sure I'd be judging the standard of international class by looking at the septics. Unless you judge premiership quality as being Stoke City.

him, lampard, cole and "stevie g" are the main reasons I find it so hard to support this team.

oh, and jermain "mini judas" defoe.

these are the teams we've got to deal with in our group. Arguably it's unlikely England will face an attack as good as Citeh's until the Semi-Finals.

Just for the record, the BBC are now hedging their bets slightly with their language - Ferdinand "could be ruled out of the World Cup".

Ferdinand is seeking a second opinion, but a Football Association source has told the BBC "it's not looking good".

The FA is due to confirm the seriousness of Ferdinand's injury later in a statement.

Ferdinand emerged from hospital on crutches and Tottenham's Michael Dawson, who has been put on standby, could fly to South Africa in the next 12 hours if the Manchester United defender is definitely ruled out.

e2a: The Guardian aren't being so cautious :(

So England replaced an adulterer with a drugs cheat and now end up with a violent thug as captain!!! Good to see that their captain is always such a good role model!
They're paid to kick a ball round a field not to be role models, leave the role model stuff to parents, teachers etc.

Dawson's a quality CB nowadays. Never loses concentration, times his tackles beautifully. Excellent in the air, and shows the sort of commitment that reminds me of Stuart Pearce. Utterly consistent too.

Apart from Gomes, he was probably Spurs most important player last season. That's why he replaced Keane as captain (whenever Ledley wasn't available).

tbf, while i'm broadly agreed that too much is made of footballer's private lives and any old dirt will be dug up, i'm pretty much in support of stripping someone of the captaincy for shagging a teammate's missus.

He's full of heart, seems a really good lad and has come on in leaps and bounds at Spurs this and last season. He's about where he should be in the England pecking order but I'd be very surprised if he let us down.

He's crap.

Even a spud's got to admit that.

Judging a player by one game?

Great stuff.

The point is he's not good enough for WC quarter and semi-Finals. And I'm not even sure Ledley is given the training restrictions his knee make to fitness levels and overall sharpness. Hopefully Dawson won't get a game.

Woodgate would be good enough though.

Woodgate would be one of the best defenders in the world if he was ever fit.

I still remember his debut for Real. Amusing.
