I just find them incredibly unstable and they tend to waste gas (imo) because they stick up so high theres no flame protection from the wind.

the flat ones are very stable, a little bulky but miles safer.

I've not heard of anybody exploding one yet.

we have the stove but no gas :( it may be easier to just buy a whole new stove but thats an annoying waste of money :(

Whenever I've been camping with mates those lay flat ones have been a bugger to buy gas for, old skool ones are usually easy!

Wonder why you're having so many difficulties.

Oh wiskey I have a tin mine goes in! No wind or anything, it's ace! :D

:D probably true... I've not been in charge of gas/stoves in our house; might put a word in when the time comes to renew our stove :)

does it run on meths zenie?

ps - butane gas cannisters for the horizontal ones come from everywhere and are dirt cheap.

No it's one of these (was the only pic I could find! :D)

I keep it in the back of the car so I can make tea wherever, dunno why they don't make them like this anymore.

Aaah really? That's better then, I do wish there was only one kind though, then you could just borrow one if you run out! :)

I suspect that safety might be a factor in phasing them out too - now that people go to festivals rather than 'camping' they have different needs and safety requirements, not least because the tents are closer. there's supposed to be 4-6m between tents on proper campsites

The flat ones take the same gas, any cannister will have the same fitting, which is why i joked i wouldnt bring a stove this weekend I'd just bring gas, cos it know it will fit someones stove. None of this brand specific gas cannisters.

Seconded, we've got two, they're brilliant. No good for backpacking type expeditions due to their size, but for festivals they're perfect :)

So who else is up for constructing a rain shelter in the campervan field? So far there is one big tarp, one gazeebo and two vans.

Anyone got some planks and stumps to fashion into benches?

To be honest I might just go to argos and buy one of them flat stove things and the gas ! It will only come to about £25 in total .

If you do get a flat one asda are doing the gas at a quid each atm. My local one doesn't do the cookers, just the gas, but others might do both?
