Elite: Dangerous

So it took me a few days' worth of grinding delivery missions, but I finally managed to accumulate the 140,000,000 credits I needed to get that Type-10 Defender I set my heart on.

This thing is redonkulous.

I'm not sure it's even manoeuvrable enough to avoid interdiction. Pitch rate is much slower than what I am used to. What would be some good guns to put in the four large hardpoints? I've already put in the fighter hangar I brought in my Keelback. I get the feeling I might not be able to avoid fights so easily in this thing.

After taking a hike on foot up a mountain with some other players in a private group, I got bitten by the wanderlust again. I'm now about 200 11.66ly jumps away from the DSSA Artemis Rest, and I'm about a hundred jumps into finding out that using the Full Spectrum System Scanner is surprisingly engaging. There are an awful lot of undiscovered planets out here. I've even made first footfall on a couple of icy moons which had some interesting looking surface features visible from a distance. This feels a lot more like proper exploration than just jumping and honking whatever's visible while fuel scooping.

400 billion systems, never mind planetary bodies!

Fucking brown dwarfs! They offer no fuel, usually have boring planets and I just got caught in the exclusion zone of one of the damn things when trying to move off after scanning. It wouldn't be so bad if the exclusion zone marker didn't disappear when you throttle right down.

Thankfully I'm not too far away from a fleet carrier.

Just remove them from your route plotting. I tend to only use those you can scoop from, O-M, and not always M

fired the old explorer up again - fucked if i can remember how to launch probes to map a planet. Im close to the nice littel water world and pressing buttons everywhere and cant fint the one the launches the probes.no joy on the internet either. bah! cheers in advance !

You need to map the DSS to a fire button IIRC. Then enter analysis mode. Something like that any way.

Dunno what they've done with it lately but I was underwhelmed tbh, once the initial thrill of 'Elite Feet' had worn off. As always, Frontier came up with a mechanic then tried to figure out what to do with it. I don't think I'll be adding to my 7700 hours.

Well, I certainly don't regret buying Odyssey. Being able to walk on planets and scan plants adds some variety to the exploration gameplay (and also nets you quite a bit of in-game cash), and the on-foot missions you can find in civilised space add an extra dimension. Ground-based Conflict Zones are a fun little addition if you fancy breaking things up with some FPS action.

whats the super useful site where you can look up planets, bases where to buy stuff etc? cant seem to find it online now - think there was a link on this thread somewhere.

nooo!!!! why?
No idea, I've had nothing to do with Elite for ages so didn't realize myself until I Googled it just now. Inara does more or less the same but is more complicated. EDDB DOES exist in that there's a website there but I didn't look to see what functionality remains. Try it, it might be ok

I've picked this up again this week, is anyone still playing it? Odyssey was cheap on Epic so I got that too, kind of makes it feel like a much more immersive game (although helpfully old Epic accounts were on their Legacy server and can't be ported to Odyssey/live servers so I had to start a new character). If VR was cheaper I'd give that a go too, but I'm not dropping £200 unless I'm sure I'm going to use it long-term.

Got my 1st gen PlayStation VR headset working with Elite eventually, after a few hours of fiddling with it. The initial experience of undocking and flying about is amazing, but the resolution is too low to be able to comfortably read all the UI, so don't think I'll be carrying on with it sadly.

Been playing more of this lately with my mate, but got the hump yesterday as I was looking for a type 8 transporter to upgrade from my type 7, had enough money to kit it out with loads of cargo space, decent FSD etc, only to discover I couldn't buy it as didn't have the 'Odyssey' update.

My mate just got me the update for Xmas, So I now have my type 8 and promptly crashed it when landing at a base, sigh.

Don't fly without rebuy!

You did have the insurance money, right?

I LOVE my type 8, got it's fsd up to G4 via an engineer (what a pain grinding for those materials was) and got a much better jump range, ditched the shield generator so I can get 400t cargo space and have now got 605 mil in the bank (22 mil round trip that takes about 13 mins).

Now I want to get a fighting ship to fully kit out, been looking at a Krait mk2 or the Fer de lance, any suggestions?

Ferdies are the fighter basically, but they need a lot of engineering if you haven't already got modules ready. That huge hard point is a thing of beauty though, it melts NPCs.

I'm shit at fighting though, so I have a massively engineered Chieftain which is essentially a flying brick with six multicannons attached to it. Essentially unkillable by NPCs and probably most players.
