Dulwich Hamlet v Farnborough Town

Listening to the commentary we have been schooled by Farnborough's game plan. They started on the front foot at pace and nullified Clarke and Felix and it worked perfectly. Granted a couple of the goals were soft.

First time I can remember leaving early, went and got my haircut so at least the afternoon had a productive end! That rain was something else, half the park got washed down to the station.

Farnborough fans were saying that's the best they have played all season by a long way.

Onwards to Tuesday, perfect opportunity to bounce back.

Love to know what wages Farnborough are paying. They looked dorking-esq
Unless something has changed very recently they aren't massive spenders. The current owner is seemingly quite sensible, most fans don't want another Farnborough boom and bust.

They are another club hindered by a high maintenance ground. It's far too good for what they require, the legacy of big spending chairmen and costs a lot to run and maintain.

After the manager was lauded for his man management of excluding Taylor and Ming, as well.

It’s all part of being of his being good with players.

Lucky they were the bigger men.
Bit simplistic but you’ve clearly got absolutely nothing positive to say about the club, chairman or manager. Ever thought they were the 2 players who came through ASPIRE so would feel Gavin’s leaving most. So to get them playing so well and happy is testament to his people skills. Then again I don’t suppose you’ve ever had a conversation with him

We get better income. Then them surely
I think they have some cash behind them. Looking at the squad they’ve assembled, it’s a lot of fl/conference pedigree. That Mason Broomfield who was very impressive, must be on big ££

Mason Broomfield has just been released by Bromley, who signed him from Barnet last year. He's aged 26, has played for at least a dozen clubs plus loan spells, and never scored more than half a dozen for anyone. (He's now got 3 in two games for Farnborough.) Yes, he was very impressive today but he's clearly never fulfilled his potential, and I doubt there was a queue of bigger clubs rushing to sign him this time.

Farnborough had a poor start to the season but are now unbeaten in the league since September. They'd only scored 23 times in 21 previous league games. They certainly did a job on us today, pressing hard right from the start. They tested our keeper within 10 seconds of the kick off and their first goal after 6 minutes was their fourth separate attack with a shot on target. They forced errors and punished them. We like to pass the ball across the back in our own half and came unstuck when they denied us the time and space to do so.

It's a tough division. You get on a nice little roll and think everything's looking good, then someone trips you up and makes you look very ordinary. We've never fully come to terms with this level in the same way we did after promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division.

When Farnborough went up most of the players they signed were from the likes of Hayes & Yeading and Met Police, who were not proven at Conference South. Not the sort of signings you'd expect from a heavily bankrolled club.

They are also well located to attract players. Just off the M3, M4, M25 and A3 with fast trains out of London in 33 minutes. They often have a lot of West London based lads in the squad.

An unexpectedly bad performance against a competitive but unremarkable Farnborough side who made us look less than ordinary.

Perhaps a testament to the impact that Barnes and his team have made so far that the level of performance has come as a bit of a shock - but also a reminder that we’re nowhere near out of the woods as yet.

Lots of teams in and around us have freshened up their squad since the start of the year, with the domino effect of EFL clubs making moves and starting to release or make players available. The togetherness of the squad has been an apparent factor behind our better form under Barnes, but with six games in the next 20 days including the next four away, got to wonder whether we’ve got enough about us to get over this blip or we’re about to miss an opportunity to keep things going if we stay with the squad as we are.

Of course it might just be one bad game, but feels like Tuesday has become even more important as a result.

We really need a quality central midfield player ...although Farnborough were better in every department today .
Agree with this - starting to think Frankie Raymond, as talented a player as he is, isn’t best suited to how Barnes wants to play. He doesn’t get the time he needs to consistently unpick teams with his passing and his lack of mobility makes him a liability when he’s asked to defend or pressure the opposition.

Just read Ben Clasper’s programme notes from yesterday, seems like the squad we’ve got will have to get us through.

I think its worth considering yesterday's result/performance in light of the last few weeks. Couldn't make it due to train strikes, but it's clear we took a bit of a pasting - that was perfectly apparent even from listening to the DHFC radio. But this is the only the second time we've been comprehensively beaten under Barnes - H&W was also a tonking but everyone knows their wage bill is colossal. Jason Prior is always a good litmus test for the sides with a big budget.

I haven't got our other results to hand, but I believe we've only lost four other games - Worthing, Dartford, Taunton, and Chippenham. All by small margins and generally towards the start of Barnes's time here. In the last month we've beaten Chelmsford, a resurgent Weymouth, and got 4 points out of Dover, not to mention drawing away at Oxford who are always a good side at this level. Prior to that we beat Hampton, Hungerford, and St Albans who are now absolutrly flying. The positives and signs of improvement from the last couple of months far outweigh the reasons to worry IMO.

I too think we could do with a couple of extra players in, but think its worth flagging that we must have (and I dont know for certain) quite a fair bit of budget tied up in Hill and Kalala, both of whom are out with or recovering from long term injuries. Comley has hardly played too and I doubt he's down here for £50 a week. We've also got Wood and Splatt out as well. Point being is that I suspect that even if Barnes wants reinforcements he may not have the budget to get them.

I think Mason Bloomfield is an interesting point as well. Sounds like he put in one helluva performance yesterday but as PP points out, he's tumbled down the divisions for the last few years so, with the greatest respect, he's probably not an absolute world beater. Players do move around at this time of year, and clubs trim their wage bills, but I don't necessarily think clubs around us will be signing players en masse that are categorically better than ours.

It was a bad day, no question, but it shouldn't detract from the clear improvements made over Nov and Dec, and I don't think it should give us massive cause for concern for the remaining 4 months of the season.

Tuesday is a big game and I'm hoping we can get a place in the semis and a real shot at winning the LSC for the first time in nearly 20 years.

I think you had to be there to get a true sense of the gap between the teams in the first half - but as I said, it's testament to the impact that Barnes and his team have made so far that the level of performance in that first 45 minutes came as a bit of a shock.

With games now coming thick and fast, including three away in the league in a row and home games against the teams currently in 3rd and 8th to close out the month, January could be pivotal - but if the standards of the majority of Barnes' tenure so far can be retained you would indeed think we should be okay.

Time will of course tell.
