Does anyone know if it’s possible to turn off the speeding sound alerts on a BMW?

I’ve rented a 1-series Beemer which is a pretty enjoyable drive in most respects. But every time you go over the limit it beeps three times, and in Spain where you will often find constant speed limit changes within even a hundred metres of road/ street, it is a constant irritation.

Before I start searching through the car’s settings, does anyone know if there’s even an option to turn the infernal contraption off?

I have no idea, sorry.

But I do commiserate - modern cars nag incessantly, not just over speeding but the parking sensors are especially annoying if one is driving in rural Wales, or similar areas.

The Clio we had last week had another good one, a verbal "This road has restrictions" usually meaning narrow, I think. We were in rural Wales, so "no shit sherlock" applied !

To turn off the speed warning on a BMW 1 Series, you can:
  • Press the "SET" button
Press and hold the "SET" button on the steering wheel to deactivate the warnings for the current journey.
  • Use the menu
Go to Driver assistance > Driving > Speed Limit Assist > Warning if exceeded and deactivate the warnings.

How does the car "know" the speed limit?
I assume that a radio signal is sent from the roadsigns. Does every speed limit road sign transmit speed information? That seems very wasteful.

Zero speed limit signs transmit speed information grandad. It's GPS.

It uses OCR in software to 'read' the signs using the forward facing camera. It's very but not totally reliable.

How does the GPS know the speed limits?

It can get the speed limit information from the mapping data provided by the Google Maps (or whatever) but BMW uses image recognition. That's how you get speed limit data when you use your phone for navigation via Android Auto/Car Play.

It's a simple enough procedure.

Step 1: Don't drive like a stupid bellend in the first place
Step 2: Repeat step 1
Step 3: Repeat step 2
